John was born in 1760. He went to Truro, Nova Scotia about 1779 and married Martha Archibald in 1781. They settled on a grant of land - a dowry from her Father Samuel Archibald, on the South Branch of the Upper Stewiacke River. They spent their lives on that land. They had five sons and six daughters. John died at Stewiacke about 1835 at age 75. He was buried at Middle Stewiacke Cemetery.
