Biography

Her birth surname was de Weyden and it was anglicised to Pratt (both mean "meadow’"). [1] [2] [3] Her name was also recorded as Adrienne van der Weede in some sources. [4] [5]

Her parents were Bernard van der Weede Pratt, a fuller, and Anne Ortels, daughter of William Ortels. [5] They must have been married by 1511, when her father was named as a guardian for Anne's underage brothers, Joseph and Leonard Ortels. [5] Thus 1511 in Antwerp is a reasonable estimate for Adriana's year and place of birth.

In 1517 her name appeared in an Antwerp scabinal Act. [5]

She was related to Jacob van Meteren, who sponsored Myles Coverdale's 1535 translation of the Bible. [6] She was also a first cousin of the geographer Abraham Ortelius. [4] [5]

Adriana Alids DeWeyden-Pratt married about 1536 [7] in Warwick, England to John Rogers [2] [6] (1506-1555).

Eleven children were listed in the Visitations of Warwickshire in Harleian MS#1563 [8] and the 1634 Visitation of Middlesex. [9] In the order given there, they included [2] [9] ...

  1. Daniel Rogers
  2. John Rogers
  3. Ambrose Rogers
  4. Samuel Rogers
  5. Philip Rogers
  6. Bernard Rogers
  7. Augustine Rogers
  8. Barnaby Rogers
  9. Susan Rogers
  10. Elizabeth Rogers
  11. Hester Rogers.

After her husband went back to England, Adriana and their German-born children were naturalised in 1552 in England. [6] That may have been when her birth surname was anglicised to Pratt.

Her husband Rev. John Rogers [9] was the first martyr during Queen Mary's reign who was burned at the stake in 1555 in Smithfield, London, England. [2] [6] She and her children were present at that time. [6]

She died on 08 Aug 1572 in Smithfield, London, England and was buried at St.Bartholomew the Great Churchyard in London, England. [10]

Research Notes

A source is needed for her middle name of Alids.

Apparently the parish registers for St.Bartholomew the Great started in 1616 which was almost 45 years after her death, [11] so the FindAGrave memorial may be unreliable.

  3. Weyden, 'weide' in the nominative in modern Dutch, means ‘meadow’. One of two main etymologies for the English surname Pratt is from the Latin 'pratum' which also means 'meadow'. It is possible that her birth surname was rendered into Latin as "de Prato" in some documents or correspondence much as in medieval times last names are found translated into Latin in records (eg "de Bello Campo" for "de Beauchamp") - but that is just a surmise by Michael Cayley.

Her LNAB was de Weyden. It was anglicised to Pratt after her marriage. Would it be possible for one of the profile managers to correct the LNAB? Thank you! Sources and explanation are in the profile.

I have revised the bio, adding more info and sourcing, and turning the para on her parents (unsourced) into a research note. There may be further small changes as I work on her children.

The children are all listed in Visitations, and currently shown as born between 1536 and 1555. (I have just amended Susanna’s birth date from 1532 to after 1536 to make it after her marriage.) Foxe’s Book of Martyrs also says there were 11 children. I have not yet checked out what sourcing there is for Adriana’s birth date but she married in 1536 or 1537: shortly before his death in early 1555 her husband said he had been married 18 years. Her last child was a suckling babe when her husband was executed. If, as the profile at present says, she was born in about 1511, she would have been in her early forties when her youngest was born, which is quite credible. I am currently working on her husband's profile, and will turn to this one later, and to the profiles of the children.

Has anyone else looked at the dates of birth for these individuals, to make sure they are indeed entered under the correct name? I know some older births took places, but does it really make sense that a woman in her 50's or 60's would be giving birth? Back then, they actually started closer to 13 or 14 having children, but there are many John Rogers and it concerns me that some of these may be mixed up children

De Pratt de Weyden-1 and Pratt-342 appear to represent the same person because: Both wife of John Rogers the Martyr. Date of death not sourced, so suggest adding the DOD on De Pratt de Weyden-1 as an alternative if no source located. Thanks for reviewing.

Looks like Pratt-342 is a duplicate?

De Pratt de Weyden-1 and Pratt-342 are not ready to be merged because: John Rogers had two wives. One in England. When he left for the new world aboard the Mayflower he took his son John by the first wife with him. I do not believe he had that many children by Adrianna. I have been out of the country for a number of years and I no longer have my research. I can't remember the first wive's name

Variation in spelling of Last Name at Birth to be added to the Other Last Name field until a primary source can be added

Difference in date of death to be noted in the biography until a source can be added.

Pratt-3472 and Pratt-342 appear to represent the same person because: similar birth, no sources on -3472 to prove death information, looks like everything is an estimate
