Biography

1st Lieutnant John Pratt served in the United States Civil War.

John was born in 1828 in Quincy, Massachusetts. He was the son of Lemuel and Martha (Clary) Pratt.

John married Elizabeth Woollaston Kent (1830-) on 15 April 1852 in Cohasset, Massachusetts, United States.[1]

John served in the Civil War. John was a 31 year-old carpenter from Quincy, Massachusetts, he enlisted in that town on 10 August 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on 24 August 1861 as a Sergeant with Company K. He was one of nine men of Company K cited for courage at the battle of Fredericksburg, fought on13 December 1862, by Lt. Col. Joseph Hayes, regimental commander.

He was wounded in the head at the battle of Gettysburg on 3 July 1863 and first hospitalized at Gettysburg and then transferred to Summit General Hospital in Philadelphia due to his wounds and was absent from the regiment until November 1863. He reenlisted for three years service in February 1864.

He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in January 1864, but was not fully commissioned until 21 April 1864, when he was assigned to Company D. He was mustered out of military service on 2 September 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.[2]

In the 1865 census John (age 35) was married in Quincy Center, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States.[3]


John died at age 59 on 13 July 1887 in Quincy, Massachusetts.[4] He is buried in Mount Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[5]
