In 1709, conditions in the Rheinland-Pfalz were terrible: war, high taxes, extremely cold weather, religious strife, and other problems induced many in the region to take advantage of the offer of the British government for passage to America, where, after serving a time producing naval stores for the Royal Navy, they would be granted 40 acres of land. On 21 December 1709, Johannes Valentine, a husbandman and vine dresser, signed such a contract with the British government. On 29 December 1709, he, together with his wife, Anna Christina, and six children (Anna Elizabetha, Anna Gertrude, Andreas David, Anthonius, Johannes Wendelinus, and Maria Agnes) left their home near Hochstadt, Südliche Wienstrasse, Rheinland-Pfalz, GE, and began a weeks-long voyage down the Rhine to Rotterdam. From Rotterdam they sailed to London and within a week they were loaded aboard ship for the voyage to America. However, administrative problems arose and they were held aboard ship for some three months before the convoy sailed for New York. The family finally arrived in New York on 14 Jun 1710 aboard the Fame, Captain Walter Houxton. After arriving in New York, Johannes Valentine stayed in the New York City* area for a while being one of two Palatine immigrants employed by Governor Hunter as gardeners before taking his family to Ulster Co, NY, and was thus among the early settlers in the Mohawk Valley. By 1742, Johannes Valentine and his sons, Hans Jurie (John) and Pieter were in the Monocacy area of Prince George’s County, MD, where they signed a petition to divide Prince George’s Parish, MD, to create All Saints’ Parish, Frederick, MD. Johannes Valentine’s sons, Andreas David, Hans Jurie “John”, and Pieter all subsequently migrated to Anson Co, NC.
