William Presley,[1] Gentleman, the immigrant, was born about 1608 in England. He was the second Burgess from Northumberland and represented this county in the Assembly November 1647. Nothing is positively known of William Presely's ancestry. He was recognized as a man of ability and high character.[2]
William Presley may have come to "Chicakawane alias Northumberland" with Colonel John Mottrom.[2] Mr. William Presly recorded a grant of 1,150 acres of land in Northumberland, County, Virginia, in 1649.
: Mr. William Presly, 1150 acs. Northumberland Co., 14 Oct. 1649, p. 186. Lying on Potomeck Riv. .... Trans. of 23 pers: [incl] Wm. Presly, Jane his wife, Wm. Presly, Payle (or Paule) Presly, Peter Presly.[3]
Another 100 acres was recorded for Wm. Presley, Gent., in Northumberland County on 29 October 1650.[3]
He was a justice of the County Court from 1650 to 1652; he was sheriff in February of 1653-54; he was churchwarden in 1665; and he was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1647-48 and 1651-52.[4][5]
William's will dated August 15, 1656 was proven January 20, 1656/57 in Northumberland County, Virginia.[5] He refers to his deceased wife and names as heirs sons William Presly, Peter Presly, grandchild Wm. Presly [son of William]. Peter Presly is named executor of his estate and his brother William Presly is appointed guardian of Peter until Peter comes of age at 21.[6]
Descendants
William's and Jane's son was Peter Presely, born about 1640, probably in England. Peter married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Richard Thompson and Ursula Bish, about 1660 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Peter Presley held the title of Justice. He bought 300 acres (formerly belonging to George Colclough), patented 1664, and 500 acres on Chickacone River in 1670. William and Peter Presley in 1666 patented 2,700 acres in Northumberland County.
Peter's son, Colonel Peter Presley, acquired the title of colonel from serving in the militia. Peter had large grants of land in the county and was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1677, 1684, 1691, and 1692. Colonel Peter Presley's will was proven April 19, 1693. He married Winifred, daughter of Colonel Leroy Griffin and his wife, Winifred Crobin.
Their daughter and heiress, Winifred, married Anthony Thornton, and was the mother of Colonel Presely Thornton (born 1710) of Northumberland House, Councilor, 1760. John Edwards patented Northumberland House in 1652, and it passed from him to the Preselys.
Peter's and Winifred's second daughter married William Boydston in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Their son, David Boydston, was born May 2, 1726, and died August 3, 1811. He married Mahala Snow, daughter of John Snow and Elizabeth Hudson, on June 1, 1746.
Their son, James Boydstun, was born September 23, 1747, near Paisley, Green County, Pennsylvania. James Boydstun married Mary Pruitt on June 15, 1761. She was the daughter of Samuel Pruitt and Elizabeth Hawker.[2]
