Biography

Hannah Preston was born in 1850 ^{[1] [2]} in Brockhampton, Gloucestershire, England & baptised at Sevenhampton, Gloucestershire, England on 18th August 1850, ^[3] the daughter of Michael Preston & Ann Ruck.

Hannah Preston, age 20, Spinster, of Swindon Road, (daughter of Michael Preston, Labourer) married James Mayall, age 23, Bachelor, Labourer, of Marsh Lane, (son of Henry Mayall, Labourer) on 9th October 1870 in the Parish Church of Cheltenham St. Peter, Gloucestershire, England according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by Arthur Hoskins. James & Hannah both signed their names. Witnesses were Absalom Deacon & Harriet Smart. ^{[4] [5] [6]}

Hannah (age 24) & her usband James (27), together with their 2 children, Richard (2) & Minnie (2 months) sailed from London, England on the "Hudson" on 20th November 1874 & arrived at Hawkes Bay, New Zealand on 12th February 1875. ^[7]

Following the death of James Mayall on 20th September 1887, ^[8] Hannah married Thomas McCarthy on 27th March 1906 in New Zealand. ^[9]

Hannah McCarthy, a widow, died aged 88, on 15th March 1939 at Pukehou, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. ^[10] Hannah's Will dated 9th April 1936, appointing her daughter Minnie Jane Baldwin as Executor & sole beneficiary, was proved on 1st May 1942 under the Seal of the Supreme Court of New Zealand at Napier. ^[11]
