Biography

There are two Mary Polly Prestons in this era of Floyd Kentucky. One married John Haws 1809 and the other married Moses Dameron 1811. Two years apart in Floyd County, Kentucky.

Polly was born about 1790.[1]

William Ely, The Big Sandy Valley (1887), p. 75.

Polly, the third daughter of Moses Preston the first, married John Hawes, a Methodist preacher. They settled on George's Creek. From there they went to Indiana, but only to return to Flat Woods, Lawrence County, where they settled for life. Their farm was about 1 mile above Louisa. Wesley Hawes, a former prominent citizen of Lawrence County, holding the office of sheriff and other official honors, was their son. Judge Asbury Hawes, a merchant and farmer of Prosperity, is another son of theirs, and, like his ancestors is a Methodist. Allen P., another son, served as captain in the Union army. Jane married Archibald Border; Betty married Abraham Childers. They lived mostly on a farm on the banks of the Sandy, although they spent some time in the Rock Castle region, the husband dying many years ago and she growing old, (now seventy-eight) lives with her children near Richardson and seems happy and contented.
Mary and John married in 1809, but the first child (Frances) that we can verify with documentation was born in 1819. We are convinced that there were other children born before Frances, but as of yet we can not find any documentation for proof. Some of the family members believe that Ann, Betsy and Jane were children of Mary and John Haws but cannot show any documentation. Therefore, we have added these three daughters but do not offer any proof.

I found a marriage record for a Sampson Haws to a Polly Matthis dated 21 May 1811 by R(t) (Robert?) Haws in Floyd County, KY.

I have access to a marriage record for Moses Damron to a Polley Preston in Floyd County, KY dated 28 Mar 1811 by R. Haws. (Floyd Co., KY Marriage Book 1, 1800-1817). So, if the above Mary "Polly" Preston Haws was married in 1809 to a John Hawes, then she later married Moses Damron/Dameron in March 1811, that would not match up with what is stated in her Bio as follows.... "Mary and John married in 1809, but the first child (Frances) that we can verify with documentation was born in 1819. We are convinced that there were other children born before Frances, but as of yet we can not find any documentation for proof. Some of the family members believe that Ann, Betsy and Jane were children of Mary and John Haws but cannot show any documentation. Therefore, we have added these three daughters but do not offer any proof." I suspect that there were two Mary Polly Prestons, as was not uncommon, and these two women are being considered the same female by assumption. More research needs to be done.

I did find the marriage record for John Haws and Polly Preston dated 7 Nov 1809, for which they were married by William Maguyer (sometimes he has written it as McGuyer). So, were John and Polly Preston only married for less than a year and a half, if she is the same Polley Preston as marrying Moses Damron/Dameron in March 1811?? Mary Polly Preston Haws and John Haws could not have had a daughter in 1819, as stipulated within the above bio, if Polly Preston married again in 1811.

Preston-2211 and Preston-1817 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. She was married in Floyd County, Kentucky 8 March 1811.
