Horace H. Preston was born on September 16, 1831 in Weathersfield, Vermont, the son of Roswell and Susan (Fisher) Preston]]. He was also known as Hayes, or Hazen, which may be what his middle name was. A Birth source is needed.

Horace H. married Adelia R. Darling, 22 Aug 1853, in Belvidere, Lamoille, Vermont. Their first child (of Hayes or Hazen), Evelin, died in 1859 at just 5 years old. Hazen and Adelia had a daughter, Estella, in 1860. In 1860, Horace was living in Vergennes, Addison, Vermont with Adelia and two children, son Harmon and daughter Estella. In 1863 they had W. R. In 1865, after the war, they had their marriage recorded again. The marriage record with Calista clearly marks it as a second marriage. They were apparently divorced soon after, or perhaps I have conflated two Horace H./Hayes/Hazen's.

He married, secondly, Calista Jeanette (Rhoades) Brown on July 2, 1838 in Windham, Vermont, ^[1] the widow of Benjamin F. Graham.

They had the following children:

• Rose Albina, b. 1868,^[1] m. John Folsom.^[2]
• twins Fred and Frank, both of whom died in infancy.^[1][3]

He served in the Civil War, credited to Charlotte, Vermont, as part of Company I, 9th Regiment, Vermont Infantry, enlisting on January 1, 1864, and mustering in 3 days later. He was wounded at Chaffin's Farm on September 29, 1864. He mustered out on May 22, 1865. ^{[4] [5] [6]}

He worked as a blacksmith. ^[7]

In 1870, he was living in Weathersfield with "Christina", child Rose, and two other children from Calista's previous marriage:

• Eldora Graham, age 13
• Vinna Graham, age 6

He was buried in Windham Center Cemetery, Windham, Vermont. ^[8]
