Biography

The identity of Nathaniel's father as Philip Preston is based on an entry in the Bedford County (VA) Court Order Book 6-82, dated 24 October 1774, that by the motion of William Mead, Nathaniel Preston is granted letters of administration of the estate of Phllip Preston. In 1785 the land was sold to Nathaniel with the provision his mother, now Mary Doss, can live on it during her life.

While it's possible that Mary was a stepmother to Nathan, there is nothing to indicate this, and she is currently the only candidate for his mother who is named in a contemporary source. Note that she was not a Doss by birth but by marrying a man named Doss after Philip Preston died.

Nathan was born about 1750. He passed away in 1832.

Nathan had a brother Moses and a sister Elizabeth Preston, all born in Bedford County Virginia. Nathan married Elizabeth Vaughn and they had 7 children: (All of this data supplied by Frances Kaye Grimes. Frances showed names as they were in the source, therefore multiple spellings may occur, as in Edy, Eddy, Eda, Edith or Jeffery and Jeffrey. Frances died April 6, 2000 but her son James Sherman Larrison will accept any questions or input.) Another source of information was "Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky." Nancy Preston, according to Jeffery Preston's deposition in Nathan's Rev. War Record, "was the eldest child born after Cornwallis was taken, but in the same month, October 1781, probably in Bedford County, Virginia. (Cornwallis capitulated Oct. 19, 1781.) The records of the family date back to 1165. They belonged to the Teutonic tribes that settled in England. The Prestons of the Sandy Valley were among the first settlers of this section of the river. When these families left the Old Dominion, it took the braves of men to face the situation, as Indians were still claming this territory as their hunting ground, the dampness of the country, by reason of not being cleared up, was a barrier, and the plagues and feveres were so bad the river bottoms were considered worthless. The Preston family trace their ancestors to the same old Virginia Stock, which is understood to be the purest Anglo-Saxon stock in America. These old families were the very earliest settlers of the country. The Preston family came from Bedford County, Virginia. The original progenitors of this family were Francis Preston and Charles Preston, who came from England and became colonial settlers of Maryland. Later representatives of the family settled in Virginia and it was from this historic Old Dominion commonwealth that the first of the family came to Kentucky. Colonel William Preston, with a company of men, made a trip to Sandy River and a tour of inspection and later was a figure in fighting Indians and helping to protect th frontiers of Kentucky. • FindaGrave.com. "Nathaniel Preston". http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=41487537 Note that the marker is modern; the source for his birth date remains a mystery. The memorial page states that Nathaniel is not buried in the cemetery, as follows:
"As far as Nathaniel's burial place, he is not buried in the Old Town Cemetery. In 1832 the cemetery on the hill in back of Paintsville was not the town cemetery but the Dixon family graveyard. Henry Dixon laid out Paintsville on his land and recorded the plat in 1826. The original plat extended from Paint Creek only as far as second street. Third Street did not exist until the late 1800s. Henry Dixon's house stood on the hill above what is now Third Street and below where the Mayo Cemetery is today. The Dixon graveyard was on the next hill over and directly in line with his house. At what point this graveyard evolved into the town cemetery is unknown. Nathaniel Preston lived on the other side of the Big Sandy River. His land was bordered on the west, north and east by the horse shoe bend in the river. Harold Lloyd Preston indicated he believed Nathaniel and Elizabeth were buried in a family cemetery on the ridge opposite the mouth of Paint Creek. He cited an 1832 deed from Isaac Preston when he was selling his land before moving to Missouri that mentions this cemetery. The Revolutionary War marker for Nathaniel that is in The Old Town Cemetery was acquired by a Preston descendant who is now deceased. When the exact burial location was never located the marker was placed near Nathaniel's daughter, Edith and her husband Francis A. Brown who are buried in the Old Town Cemetery. The fact that is not a memorial marker has caused almost everyone to erroneously assume Nathaniel is buried there. Source: Val McKenzie "
