Biography

Henry Thomas, the thrid son of John Price and Elisabeth Klophel, was born on 8 January 1835 in Londonderry City, Ireland. [1]

Henry Thomas joined the Inland Revenue and his early career can be tracked through newspaper announcements. The first occurs in the Derry Journal on 25 September 1860 stating:

INLAND REVENUE - Mr. Henry Thomas Price, officer of Killarney First Ride, Bandon Collection, and son of Mr. John Price, Derry, has been appointed to Cleobury Ride, Stourbridge Collection.".

Census records show him as living in Shropshire in 1861.[2] On 6 April 1865 he married Selina Emily Worthing at St Nicolas's church in Hereford.[3]

The Londonderry Guardian on 24 April 1866 recorded:

EXCISE PROMOTION We learn with pleasure that Mr Henry Thomas Price, officer, Ludlow first ride, Hereford Collection, has been appointed to Bromley first division, Middlesex Collection...".

Another notice in the Londonderry Sentinel records that on 20 July 1866 a daughter was born to the family. At the time their address was: 1 Jessie's Cottages, Brice Road, London (this was presumably Bruce Road). The BD&M indexes indicate that this child was named Selina Constance Maude and that she died before her first birthday, her death registered in the quarter ending June1867.

In 1867 the couple had a son Henry Thomas Warthing born in Bruce Road, London (also recorded in Londonderry newspapers). The birth of Minnie Mabel in 1871 was registered in Kensington, London. In 1871 the family lived at Golbourne Terrace, Kensington.[4] Minnie's baptism in Llanelly in Wales in 1873 (her parents named in full confirms the identification), indicates that the family had moved there from London. Sadly, however, Minnie's mother Selina Emily had died there the year before.

The two surviving children are found living with relatives by the time of the 1881 census, suggesting that they may by then have been orphaned. There is a Thomas Henry Price of exactly the correct age who died in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1877, so this could be him.
