Note N3Fiercely loved her children and grandkids. Loving to all. Her primary focus in life was her children. Had no interests in anything but her children. So busy with 12 kids, she didn't have much time for guidance. She stressed honesty but lied for her husband, trying to cover for his behaviors. Had no intrest in the children's social lives or character building. By the time Hazel was 16, roles switched and expected Hazel to be more in charge. Might have been immature in her mind. Encouraged kids to go to church but kids mostly raised themselves. All kids turned out independant. Tight financially as "Dick's hatband." They were poor.

She came from a big family as well. Loved music and was self-taught piano player. Wanted to be a teacher. Very giving of herself. She would play and the kids would sing. [Stecks Family File.FTW].

• Source: S157 Nansemond Indian Tribal Association The Nansemond Indians originally lived along the Nansemond River and were part of the empire (not a confederacy) ruled by Powhatan, the father of Pocahontas. When the English arrived in Virginia, the tribe had about 300 warriors and a total population of perhaps 1200 people. The Nansemonds were initially wary and often hostile toward the English, but by the 1630's some of them had changed their minds. A family sermon book still in the Chief's possession records the 1638 marriage of John Bass, and a Nansemond convert to Christianity named Elizabeth. Everyone in the modern Nansemond tribe is descended from that marriage.
