John Price,[1] named in an indenture dated 1610-1611 as son and heir of Richard Price by his wife Ursula,[2] was born in 1584 in Montgomeryshire, Wales.[3]
John married Mary _____, who may have immigrated with John; William Price, listed in the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster as arriving aboard the Starr and living at Colledge Lands, Henrico,[4] is thought to have been their son.[5]
After Mary died, John married Anne Matthews. (Note: Here she is named as Ann Matthews, elsewhere in the bio she is named Ann Baker. Her maiden name is not known.)
John had married Ann (1604-1666)[6] by January 1624/5, when the muster showed John Price (40), Ann his wife (21) and a 3-month-old child named Mary at Neck of Land, Charles City.[7] After John died, Anne married Robert Hallom, then Daniel Llewellyn.
John Price was born in 1584 and came to America in 1610/11, at a time when life was exceedingly hard and few survived. John Price was about twenty-seven years of age when he left Wales to come to America from the county of Montgomery or possibly Brecknock Wales. John Price and his family traveled on the Ships - The PROSPEROUS, The ELIZABETH and The STARR which made up the convoy of 300 people. The trip took three months to make the journey and they arrived in Virginia 22 May 1611.[8][9]
John Price settled in The Neck of Land Charles City. Indians fell suddenly, by night on settlers 22 March 1622 killing 347 people. The Indians burned their homes and plantations, almost defacing the beauty of the whole colony. John Price and his wife were listed as survivors of the Indian massacre of 1622. [10]
John Price and his family lived among other famous settlers such as Captain John Smith who shouldered the biggest part of the responsibility of the settlement, John Rolfe and Pocahontas who left the settlement to return to England in 1616. This left 350 people behind living in six widely scattered and dangerously isolated communities.
John Price also became known as an "ancient planter", meaning that any man who worked seven years "plus" for their "divedent" of 100 acres finally received their land. Many worked several additional years for possession of their land. This also made them eligible for another tract of land in the same amount. [11]
John Price was a Member of the Virginia Convention of 1625.[12]
Research Notes
Although current research casts doubt on it,[13] the lineage of John Price has been approved by the order of Descendants of the Knights in the Garter in England. Descendants are eligible for membership in the National Society, Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede.[14]
There have been references saying his middle name is Andrew. No sources are known.
Some trees say his wife Anne was the daughter of Richard Baker and Margaret (Elkes) Baker, but her maiden name is not known.
Information from Vina Chandler Price's 1988 Ancestors and Descendants of John Price: Immigrant to Virginia 1610-11 -
John and his wife Mary had "two sons and a daughter." He immigrated from Wales to Jamestown aboard the Starr, which arrived May 22, 1611.[15]
Internet Archive's "Open Library" does not have a copy, but does offer the following:
Edition Description: "An exhaustive work of patience and accuracy by a certified genealogist of the known descendants of the first person into America with the surname Price - John Price of Breckonshire aboard the ship, "Starr". Precise tracking and identifiers are used throughout with a scholarly detachment about the veracity of some existing conclusions made by others. She goes not one inch further than the verifiable facts allow."[16]
First Sentence: "Seventy-eight years ago Benjamin Luther Price published his work, "John Price The Emigrant". To my knowledge this has been the only definitive work to date on the descendants of John Price."[16]
B.L. Price's 1910 work (available online courtesy of archive.org - image and full text versions) contains some incorrect information (such as John arriving aboard the Starr in 1620) that is corrected by V.C. Price's 1988 work.
Indenture
An indenture is cited as source for his parentage as well as evidence that the John Price of Montgomery, Wales, son of Richard, is the same John Price found in the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster, age 40, having arrived in Virginia aboard the Starr -
John Price signed an indenture in 1610/11, in which he was described as "son and heir of Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery"[17]
The SGM discussion about John notes that the citation for the indenture is "British Museum, A.D.D. Charter 1036"[18] (Google Books' snippit view includes only part of the information from the indenture, which is said to also name John's mother as Ursula). The index of charters describes the indenture as "Manavon Lian, co. Montgom. Sale in, 1610. Add. 1036.[19]
Transcriptions of the indenture vary. The following information is from the SGM discussion just mentioned:[18]
"John Pryce, was described as son and heir of Richard Pryce in an indenture in 1610-11 from Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery County, Gentlemen, and Ursula Pryce, his wife to ___ Robinson. Thomas Pryce, brother of Richard Price II, was one of the witnesses. [Indenture, British Museum, A.D.D. Charter 1036, PC]."[18]
The SGM post continues: "The signature on this indenture corresponds in every detail with the signature of John Price on the Petition to the King sent from Virginia in 1625-26 when John Price signed as a member of the Burgess. [Public Record Office, London, England, C.O. 1/3, 17276, PC]."[18]

↑ Despite Ann being referred to as his mother in the 1638 record, for Matthew to patent land, he would have to be 21, which puts his birth as 1617 or earlier, and Ann did not arrive in Virginia until 1620.
Price, John "The Ancient Planter" is confirmed by yDNA as the ninth great grandfather of K. Coppage and Hershel E. Price Jr. WikiTree id of K. Coppage is Coppage-146 and of Hershel E. Price Jr is Price-16298. Testing company is FTDNA. Both individuals tested at 111 markers with haplogroup R-M269. The predicted relationship is ninth great grandfather and is confident.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
Although dates differ and his wife's name does not agree, it appears John Price (1573-1638) is intended to be this John Price (abt.1586-1628). The only date that comes close is the date used as death date for John Price (1573-1638), 13 May 1638. On 23 May 1638, "Mathew Price, sonn & heire to John Price, late of Va.," recorded 150 acres in Henrico County. "Due in right of his father..." This May 1638 date has been taken as death date for John Price (1573-1638). Consideration should be given to possibly merging the family of Price-7160 with this John Price.
I asked US Southern Colonies Project to adopt this profile as a project-managed profile. The PC for Managed Profiles added the project box; I've added the project account.
update - the LNAB for Ursula's profile was changed to Unknown
I'm not finding support for a mother named Ursula. I did find information that David Middleton is not known to have had a daughter named Ursula - see the discussion here - so his mother was not Ursula Middleton. There was an Ursula Middleton who was buried in 1637, in England, but she was the wife of John Middleton (maiden name not known - see this G2G discussion).
From what I've been able to determine, the FindAGrave memorial should not be used as a source for him. Is there another source that can be cited for his mother being a Middleton?
recommend that the profile for Thomas - Price-161 - be detached. I have just finished post-merge cleanup for Ann, John's wife (born 1604, so not the mother of Thomas, born 1609 according to his profile) and find no support that he had a son named Thomas.
No apology needed. The placement of the YDNA statement was correctly located in Sources. I believe that conforms with WikiTree style and standards. I am not certain who set up the source section by contributor but that is not the standard way of doing so, I do not have a source section and that designation can be removed. Your action was correct.
I'm sorry Mr. Douglas I saw "sources" and added it without setting up my personal sources part. I hope the change straightens it out. Again a apologize for adding it under your sources section. Thanks, Hershel

There are no sources currently that support a middle name for John Price. All the documentation zi have seen refers to him simply as John Price.
I also noticed that he is listed as John Andrew Price l which implies there must be a John Andrew Price ll. There is a John Price ll listed as a child however no middle name is given. I would consider removing the middle name Andrew until if and when supporting evidence can be given.
Price-13455 and Price-171 appear to represent the same person because: Same given name, same LNAB, same parents, same siblings, same dates, same locations
Price-171 has a nice biography, but part of it says he arrives in 1610/1611 and another part says 1620. If someone has some information to clarify that would be helpful. Secondly, is there a category for the Indian Massacre of 1622? Finally, is Charles City a category or just part of the Southern Colonies? Some say its near Jamestowne and wasn't sure how to categorize that, if at all. TX!
Price-8079 and Price-171 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, these appear to be the same person based on data in common. Vital stats are slightly different - these could be noted in the biography as points for future research if PMs are happy these are still the same person Thanks a lot
Price-1081 and Price-171 do not represent the same person because: It is possible that these men could be siblings, and that would account for different names, birth and death dates.
Thanks Ken!
