Biography

Jacob Price was born on 15 Jan 1775 to "Daniel Preis" and "Sara" in New York Colony and baptized in the German-speaking community that built St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Manorton in Livingston, Columbia County, New York. The minister who very likely baptized him was John Frederick Riss (or Reiss), who was pastor to the dispersed congregation from 1757 to 1783. [1]

In her 1990 autobiography, Frances Rosalia (Price) Latta (1906-2003), the great-great-great granddaughter of Jacob Price, wrote,

My father [[[Price-21559|David Manley Price (1869-1927)]]] told us that many years ago the Price family had settled on a large tract of land where the city of Auburn, New York, is now located. They were among the first settlers in America and this was their farm. There were three Price brothers. One had gone to the Gold rush in California to seek his fortune. Then it was discovered that a large sum of money, something like a land grant, would be awarded to the people who had first landed on the Auburn property. The signatures of all three brothers had to be procured. The one who had gone west disappeared, and he was never found, so the bequest was never honored.[2]

This story could refer to Jacob and his brothers, or to his sons.

We know Jacob and Catherine Barringer, also called Caty Berringer, were the parents of the following children, whose births were all recorded by the Dutch Reformed Church of Wynantskill in North Greenbush, NY:

The records of the Church at Wynantskill also list

  • Abraham Price and Sarah Miller, his wife, parents of Daniel, b. Feb 1801, and Anniche, b. 18 Mar 1803, Christina, b. 1 May 1805, John Miller, b. 28 Jan 1810, Abraham, b. 12 Mar 1818, and Jacob, b. 2 Jun 1814, [4] He may have been a brother to Jacob Price.

Other persons who may have been children of Catrina or Catharine Berringer and Jacob Preis or Price include

  • Sally Price (Sally Price (1800-1887)): The only evidence for her existence is a biographical sketch of Dr. John Frank, who was born in Virgil 3 Sep 1797 and married "Sally, daughter of Jacob Price of Virgil."[5]
  • John P Price (John P Price (1806-1888)): I have found no evidence for his alleged birth to Jacob and Catherine Price about 1806 in Oneota, NY, although there was a John P Price born around this time who lived in Virgil with his wife, Betsey and children Fidelia, Sanford, Clarissa, Alice, and baby Price in 1850. He was probably the same person who bought part of Jacob and Catherine's farm in 1827. See below.
  • Catherine Price (Catherine Price (1811-1839)): I have found no evidence for her birth to Jacob and Catherine Price about 1811 nor any evidence that she ever lived in Virgil.
  • Jacob Price, Jr. (Jacob Price Jr (1812-)): I have found no evidence for his birth to Jacob and Catherine Price about 1812. There was a Jacob Price, Jr., living in Virgil in 1840, with one male under 5, one male 20 to 30, 1 female under 5, one female 30-40.
  • Asa Price (Asa Price (1815-1895)): He is almost certainly the same man who bought land from Jacob and Catherine in 1840. The 1855 NY Census for Virgil describes Cathrine Price, then living with Asa and his family, as his mother. She is also listed as a part of his household in the 1850 US Census (See Catrina Barringer (abt.1774-1860).

In 1799 Jacob Price owed 43 cents in tax on his real estate worth $364 and personal property worth $70 in Greenbush, Rennselaer, NY.[6]

In 1801 Jacob Price was assessed $1.65 in tax on his real estate worth $700 and personal property worth $60 in Greenbursh, Rennselaer, NY [7]

In 1802 Jacob owed 63 cents in tax on his real estate worth $700 and personal property worth $100. [8]

There is some evidence that the family lived in Otsego County from 1803 to 1818. Most of these are land records, listed below. In 1855 Catherine (Barrenger) Price reported to the enummerator of the NY Census in Virgil that she came to Cortland County in 1816. [9]

The 1810 US Census for a J Price in Otego Township in Otsego, County, NY, enumerated 6 Aug, lists a Jacob Price in a household consisting of to males 16-25 and 1 female 16-25.[10] but a different record of this Census at FamilySearch, with no image attached, lists the household of Jacob Price as consisting of 2 males under 10, one male 10-16, one male 16-26, one male 45 and over, one female under 10, 3 females 10-16, and one female 26-45. [11]

Jacob and Catherine moved to Virgil, NY, in 1816. We know this because both Catherine and her son, Asa, with whom she was living in 1855, reported that they had been in Cortland County for 39 years. [12] The 1820 US Census for Jacob Price listed 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 45 and over.

The 1825 New York State Census, probated on 4 Oct, shows five males and 2 females in the household of Jacob Price. One young man, aged 18-45, was subject to military duty and another, presumably Jacob, was qualified to vote. The record also shows that Jacob and his family owned 50 acres of land, one cow, 2 horses, 20 sheep, and 8 hogs. They had manufactured 30 yards of linen, cotton, or other thin cloth in the previous year.[13]

They must have sold or given away some of their property by 1835, for the NY census for that year shows that they owned only 20 acres. Then in their 50s, they still lived with three other, younger persons, presumably their youngest children.[14] Nevertheless, land records suggest that they were still buying and selling land until 1840. They owned parts of lots 20, 23, 24, 25, and 33 in Virgil township. See below, Land Records, Cortland County. Three of these deeds are of particular interest:

  • Jacob and Catherine sold 30 acres of their farmland in lot twenty 20 of Virgil to John Price, presumably their son, on 6 Mar 1827.
  • Asa Price, presumably their son, sold Jacob Price part of lot 33 in Virgil on 30 April 1839.
  • Jacob and Cathrine sold a parts of lots 23, 24, and 33 to Asa Price, presumably their son, on 24 Aug 1840.

Jacob Price does not seem to have been able to write. In those cases where his signature was required for his numerous land transactions, he made his mark.

Jacob Price died on 25 Mar 1842 in Virgil, Cortland, New York. No probate records or will for him are listed in the Cortland County, New York, Index of Wills.[15]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacob:
