"Mathewes Prices, of Henrico Co., Va., was born in Wales, 1615, and died in Henrico. He was left by his parents to be educated in Wales, while they emigrated to America but when 20 years old he came over in the ship 'George Jo. Severne', August 21, 1635. He was the son of John Price of Henrico who came to Virginia in the 'Starr', 1620.[1][2]
Mathew died childless. His heirs were the sons of his brothers, brother John, Daniel and John, who "sold 150 acres in 1677, land which was originally patented to the first John Price in 1619. Their uncle Matthew patented land on 23 May 1638; land that was on Turkey Island Creek, bounded by Bremo and the lands granted to his late father John Price and in possession of his mother Ann Hallom, widow."[3]
Mother: For Matthew to patent land in 1638, he would have to have been born by 1617, which fits with the 1615 birth year (arrived aboard the George in 1635 at age 20). This means that John's first wife, Mary Kemeyes, not Ann (his second wife, who was 11 in 1615) was Matthew's mother.[4]
This Matthew is shown as born 1626 in the Pedigree File that cites the 1638 patent for proof he is son of John (see FS Matthew Price). Text on that entry inserts "(step)" in comment that the land was held by his mother Ann Hallom, widow (and that patent is apparently the source for the 1638 death of Robert Hallom, her 2nd husband). The source attached to the Matthew Price's Pedigree File entry is
That source (Price's 1988 work) fills in the year that the Starr arrived with John Price aboard - 1611 - and notes that he and Mary had "two sons and a daughter." That would cover this Matthew and his brother John.[5]
"John Price received a patent for 150 acres of land in Henrico County in 1620. ... Matthew Price, son and heir of John Price, deceased, was granted 150 acres on Turkey Island Creek in Henrico County on 23 May 1638. -- (Manuscript written by Mr. R. A. Brock, Richmond, Va.)"[6]
"granted by patent to his late father John Price, now in possession of his (step) mother Ann Hallom Widow - being due unto him in right of his father who had a patent granted 20 Feb 1619." PB 1, part 2, p. 558.
18 Oct 1681. Henrico Co. Benjamin Hatcher to John Pleasant. Plantation of father William Hatcher which land was purchased of Daniel and John Price, 1677, 150 acres called by the name Turkey Island Point. DB 1, p.186.
" Among the sons of John Price and Ann, his wife, is found one named Mathewes. Mathewes Price was born in Henrico County and one tradition says that he married a Miss Pugh of Wales; and another states a Miss Nelson. However, the marriage record or bond has not been found, and therefore it cannot be stated positively who Mathewes Price married."[7]
