In the News

Jan 1881 - This morning at 7.35 o'clock, fire was discovered in the rear of Packard's Block, on Crombie street, Salem. The room where the fire was first seen has for a long time been used as a paint shop, and was so saturated with flammable material that the place was in a blaze in a moment. The wind which has prevailed with so much fury during the night had subsided, rendering it possible to prevent a spread of the conflagration. Packard's Block, which is on the corner Crombie and Essex streets, is occupied as a furniture store and factory by W. C. Packard & Co., and as a dry good store by Benjamin B. Price.
The firemen responding to the alarm, and although greatly impeded by the intense cold, which rendered the working of the hydrants a difficult matter, they succeeded in confining the fire to the block where it started, and in two hours had it under control. The firemen suffered severely from the cold which clothed them in an icy coat of mail. The citizens aided the occupants of the burning building to remove their stocks, which was accomplished, with considerable loss of fire and water. There were 15 streams playing upon the building at one time, but the water turned to ice so rapidly that they seemed to make no impression on the fire.
The Crombie Street Church was considered at one time to be in great danger, and also Mechanic Hall, but there being no wind the fire was kept away from them. The loss is estimated by our reporter at $12,000. [14]
Jan 1881 - Following are the losses and insurance on the Salem fire of Saturday: W. C. Parkard & Co., loss on building, $3500; insured for $6000, as follows: People's, New Jersey, $1000; Standard, New Jersey,. $1000; Rochester German, New York, $1500; Trade, Camden, N. J., $1500; Commercial, New York, $1000. Loss on stock from $5000 to $7000; insured for $9000, as follows: Franklin of Boston, $2000; St. Nicholas, New York, $2000; Firemen's, Baltimore, $2000; Phoenix, New York, $1000; Commercial Mutual, London, $1000. Benjamin B. Price, dry goods, loss perhaps from $5000 to $7000 by water. The loss may vary from these figures, as some goods wet may not be materially damaged, while others may be rendered worthless. Insured for $10,500, as follows: Security, New Haven, $2000; Neptune, Boston, $2000; Manufacturers', New Jersey, $1500; Manufacturers' Fire and Marine, Boston, $3000; Buffalo Germany, New York, $2000. An addition of $1500 to $2000 worth of goods to Price's stock was made but a week ago. Gifford Brothers' building, loss by water several hundred dollars; insured for $900 in the Essex Mutual, and probably elsewhere. The total loss is probably $15,000. [15]
April 1896 - Daniel P. McCarthy, recently engaged in the small wares business in Boston, has and the millinery business in Boston, has filed a voluntary petition in insolvency. His liabilities are about $8000, of which $2000 is secured. At the first meeting, Benjamin B. Price, of Salem, one of the largest creditors, was appointed assignee. [16]
Nov 1908 -- One of the older members of the Witch battalion at Salem has attracted particular notice because of his remarkable record as a marching campaigner. For the past 52 years Benjamin B. Price, a merchant, has been identified with some company or other representing the republican party during every presidential campaign with but a single exemption.
In 1860, when Lincoln for the first time received the nomination for the office of President, Mr Price was residing in Ballardvale, not far from Andover. There circumstances were such that he was obliged to relinquish the idea of joining a battalion.
Save for that one occasion, however, this veteran has not failed to connect himself with some republican company every four years since that party come into existence in the year 1856. Such a record, it is safe to assert, can be claimed by very few and it is doubtful if it can be surpassed by any in this part of the state at least.
Nashua was the scene of Mr Price's first appearance as a campaigner. There, at the age of 12, he joined a company entirely of young fellows like himself, who paraded with a great display of enthusiasm. Costumes consisting of white shirts, knickerbockers and caps were the regulation garb of the battalion, and a flaming torch was carried by each boy. It happened, however, that the republican candidates for the term, Fremont and Dayton, were defeated.
Mr Price was next associated with the Wideawakes of Cambridge, when Lincoln was chosen for the second time as the republican candidate, and also during Grant's campaign. Bright silver capes were worn by the members of this company, and, as has always been the custom on such occasions, torches were carried. Wideawakes were particularly courageous, and, as a rule, took great pains to lay out their line of march through those districts, where democratic pirnciples (original spelling) were especially popular.
Quite naturally, these invasions of the enemy's territory were strenuously resented, and on more than one occasion the torchlight parades proved quite exciting trips. Mr Price still tells the story of a parade through Charlestown where his company was made a target for vegetables, fruit and whatever else was handiest to the wrathful spectators.
During the campaigns when Hayes and Blaine were republican candidates for the presidency, Mr Price was a member of the old Salem Flambeaux. This company consisted principally of business men and had an enrollment of fully 200 members. Mr Price particularly recalls the major of the Flambeaux, who was George Pickering.
When in 1888 a battalion known as the Salem Witches was organized in his home city, Mr Price was among the charter members of the company, and since that time each presidential campaign has found him in their ranks. He still displays the original badge which he wore consists of a strip of red ribbon about six inches in length, ornamented with gilt spangles and star at the top, while gold tassels finish the lower edge. On it are printed in gilt these words: "Salem Witches, organized Sept 5, 1888."
The first costume adopted by the Witches was most appropriate, consisting, as it did, of red and white striped skirts, red caps and the regulation black witch hats with tall steepled-shaped crowns. Brooms were utilized as torches and the entire outfit was decidedly in keeping with the name of the battalion and the traditions of the city which it represented. Changes have been made from time to time, until now the old witch costume has given place to that of the 20th century girl, even to the extend of adapting the far-famed merry widow hat. The illustration shows Mr Price as he appeared in the campaign of 1900, wearing that season's attire.
For a time Mr Price was undecided as to whether he would join the ranks this year, but in the end the fascination proved too great to be resisted and consequently he paraded in the 13th presidential campaign, in which he has taken an active interest. Although he has already celebrated his 64th birthday his friends hope that he will not make this his last season with the Salem Witches. [17]
