Daughters of the American Revolution
William Price is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A093121.

William Price was born on 30 Sep 1730 to John Price and Hannah Williamson in Henrico county, Virginia.

William married Susannah Burton on 29 Mar 1752.

The marriage date and birth dates of William and Susannah are cited from a Family Bible and reported in the National Genealogical Quarterly June 1959). William Price is a recognized DAR Patriot. He was appointed Constable for Pittsylvania Co., VA, in November Court 1774 (Pittsylvania Co. Court Records Book 2, p. 412) and furnished supplies for the Continental Line as recorded in Pittsylvania Co. Record of Claims for Supplies Continental Line Use—Revolutionary War, pp. 30, 51.

Susannah was the daughter of Hutchins Burton and Susannah Allen. The will of Hutchins Burton (Henrico Co., VA, written 09 May 1763, recorded 03 Oct 1763) names his daughter Susannah Price and son-in-law William Price and her daughters Sarley, Susannah, and Elizabeth.

Both William and Susannah were born in Henrico Co., VA. The births of 2 of their children are recorded in The Douglas Register in Goochland Co, VA, in 1774 and 1776. After that, William and Susannah lived in Louisa Co., VA (sold land in Goochland in 1769; other records in Louisa Co., VA, Deed Book E, 204 and Louisa Co., VA, Deed Book F, 455).

In 1790 and 1800, Charles Burton was enumerated in the Spartanburg, SC, census.

Land Purchases and Deeds

On 23 Sep 1749 William Price’s father, John Price, deeded land to William (Goochland Co., Deed Book 6, p. 32).

On 23 Jun 1766, John conveyed to his son William the 64 acres where he lived (Henrico Co Wills & Deeds 1750-67, p. 971).

On 22 Aug 1776 William, while apparently living in Louisa Co, VA, purchased land in Pittsylvania Co., VA, from Mark Hayden. There was no deed book citation with this claim, so this may be questionable.

On 15 Jan 1784 Charles Burton of Pittsylvania Co., VA, sold land to William Price of Louisa Co., VA (Pittsylvania Co., VA, Deed Book 7, p. 201). Charles Burton was the brother of William Price’s wife Susannah. Later in that Deed Book, on page 566, it is noted that Charles Burton’s wife Mary was interviewed privately about relinquishing her dower.

“Whereas Charles Burton by his certain Indenture has conveyed to William Price one certain parcel of land containing by Estimation 1250 acres and whereas Mary, the wife of the said Charles Burton, cannot conveniently travel to and from our County Court of P, Know ye that we trust in your faithful & provident Circumspection in Examining Mary, wife of said Charles Burton, whether she does freely and voluntarily relinquish her right of Dower” and that “By virtue of the above Commission to us directed we have examined Mary, apart from her said husband and she relinquished her right of Dower”.

On 26 Nov 1786, William Price Senr and Susanna his wife of Pittsylvania Co., VA, sold land in Louisa Co., VA, to Benjamin Crenshaw (Louisa Co., VA, Deed Book E, p. 204, and Pittsylvania Co., VA, Deed Book 4, p.368).

On 01 May 1789, William Price Senr of Pittsylvania Co., VA, and his wife Susannah sold to Wm Price Junr of Trinity Parish, Louisa Co, VA, 200 acres on Roundabout Creek (Louisa Co., VA, Deed Book F, p. 455).

There are numerous deeds in Pittsylvania Co., VA, involving land sold to or by William Price from then until his death. In 1787 (Deed Book 8, p. 142), in 1789 (Deed Book 8, page not cited), in 1791 (Deed Book 9, p. 36, 39, and 41), 1798 (Deed Book 11, p. 258), 1805 (Deed Book 14, p. 365 and 468).

Susannah, Daniel, Meredith and Major Price signed a deed dated 18 Sep 1815 dividing what was loaned to her from William’s estate to be divided at her discretion upon her death (Pittsylvania Co., VA, Deed Book 21, p.39). The deed states that Susannah and Daniel reside in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and Marada and Major are “of the County of Caswell, North Carolina”. Other sources state that she names as her children and William’s Sally Burton, Robert Price, Patsy McDaniel (deceased), Polly McDaniel (deceased), and Nancy Stokes (deceased), Betsy Perkins, and John Price. My copy obtained at the Pittsylvania Co., VA, Court House includes Sally Burton, Betsy Perkins, John Price, William Price, Cutbird Price, Daniel Price, Marady Price, Polly McDaniel (deceased), Nancy Stokes (deceased), and Major Price. I see no mention of Robert Price or Patsy McDaniel. [Not that they weren’t her children, but I don’t see them in this document. Information on Robert indicates he may have moved to KY prior to 1815. Information on Patsy indicates that she and her husband may have died prior to 1815.]

Children

The names and dates of birth of most of these children are reportedly from a Bible reported in a book published by John Frederick Dorman. Other information was obtained from Adventurers of Purse and Person, 4th Edition. I have noted instances in which these sources disagree.

(1) Sarah (Sally) Price 08 Jan 1754 m. Walthall Burton
They married 13 Feb 1773 (recorded in Douglas Register). He was her 1st cousin, the son of William Allen Burton and Mary Walthall. They moved to Chester Co., SC, by 1784, where Walthall purchased 400 acres from Sally’s uncle Daniel Price. Walthall later sold this land they they moved to Stokes Co., NC, by 1796. She is named by her mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above.

(2) Susannah Price 26 Mar 1756
The will of Hutchins Burton, written and proven in 1763, named his daughter Susannah Price and her daughters Sarley, Susannah, and Elizabeth. Susannah is not named in the 1815 deed mentioned above, so I expect she died prior to that with no children. There is some confusion here. There is a marriage bond for a Susannah Price, daughter of William Price, to marry Drury Adkins dated 05 May 1805. Many internet sources put that Susannah here. However, internet sources then list 9 children of Drury Adkins, with birthdates from 10 Sep 1807 – 1824. This Susannah would have been age 49 when she married, and age 68 when the last of those children was born. I am guessing that either the internet has the wrong Susannah Price or the children are misplaced and do not belong to this couple. Perhaps Drury’s wife Susannah was a daughter of this Susannah’s brother William.

(3 ) Elizabeth (Betsy) Price 13 May 1758 – Jan/Feb 1843 m. Joseph Perkins d. May 1814-13 Feb 1815
They married 21 Dec 1775 (recorded in Douglas Register). She is named by her mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above. Joseph’s will was written 16 May 1814 and recorded in Louisa Co., VA, 13 Feb 1815 (WB 5, p. 543). Elizabeth’s will was written 25 Jan 1840, with a codicil added 03 Jan 1843, and recorded on 13 Feb 1843 in Louisa Co., VA (WB 11, p. 33).

(4) John Price 25 Mar 1760 – 1824 m. Mary Johnson 19 Apr 1763 – 24 Dec 1822
They married July 1775 (another source has 03 Aug 1779, citing the Douglas Register) in Goochland Co., VA. He is named by his mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above. John died in Logan Co., KY.

(5) William Price 02 Mar 1762 m. (1) Susanna Cocke 05 Aug 1764. They married March 1784 in Goochland Co., VA.
He married (2) Elizabeth Hudson on Oct 1787 in Amelia Co., VA. (Yes, Purse and Person [1] has both marriages in 1784, but Price researcher David Galloway has the 2nd marriage on 06 Oct 1787 so I’m going with that). She is named as a daughter of Christopher Hudson in his will written 04 Nov 1788 and recorded 28 Feb 1789 (Amelia Co. WB 4, p. 131). In the marriage bonds she is named as Elizabeth Littlepage. My guess is that she was 1st married to a Littlepage and that her maiden name was Hudson, so I will list her as a Hudson.

(6) Cuthbert/Cutbird/Culberth Price 13 Jun 1764 married Nancy Thompson June 1788 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Cuthbird was given 220 acres in his father’s will written in 1809, proven in 1815.

(7) Daniel Price 27 Aug 1766–23 Jan 1846 m. Lucy Coleman 14 Aug 1772–06 Aug 1831. Daniel and Lucy married Nov 1790 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. The dates above are from a survey of Green Hill Cemetery in Danville, VA. P & P has the dates 17 Aug 1766-23 Jan 1846 and 14 Aug 1771-06 Aug 1831. Daniel was named as an executor in his father’s will written in 1809, proven in 1815. Daniel’s will was written in 1845 and proven 16 Feb 1846 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, WB 2, pp. 12-15.

(8) Robert Price 06 Oct 1768 married Sally Church on Sep 1788 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Sources state that he is named by his mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above, but he is not in the copy I got from the court house. Information on Robert indicates he may have moved to KY prior to 1815.

(9) Maraday/Meredith Price 01 Jun 1770 – 07 Feb 1817 married Mary (Polly) McDaniel 1772 – 21 Oct 1857 on 27 Dec 1791 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. (P&P has the same date in 1795, as it is reported in Knorr’s Marriage Bonds book, but I have a copy of the actual marriage bond showing 1791, as well as, a deed executed in March 1795 concerning the lands of Mary’s mother and referring to Meredith and his wife Polly Price).
The birth dates above are from P & P, however, the dates of death are from a cemetery survey in Caswell Co., NC (P&P had only the years 1818 for Meredith and 1858 for Mary). Maraday was named as an executor in his father’s will written in 1809, proven in 1815.

(10) Mary (Molly/Polly) Price 06 May 1772 – bef 1815 married William McDanielon 07 May 1797 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. (P& P has birth date of 15 Mar 1774, which doesn’t make sense, given her sister’s birth date of 07 Mar 1774, also from P&P, so I am using the date I had found from other sources. See the detail later in this paper). She is named as deceased by her mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above. William is named as a son-in-law in Polly’s father’s will written 1809 and proven in 1815.

(11) Nancy Price 07 Mar 1774 (from P&P) – bef 1815 married Silvanus Stokeson Dec 1793 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. (I have a birth date of 15 May 1774 and marriage date of 16 Dec 1793.) She is named as deceased by her mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above.

(12) Martha (Patsy) Price 21 Jun 1776 (from P&P) married Joel McDaniel They married Sep 1796 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. (I have a birth date of 01 Jun 1776 and marriage date of 19 Sep 1796.) Sources state that she is named as deceased by her mother in the 1815 deed mentioned above but she is not in the copy I got from the court house. Information on Patsy indicates that she and her husband both may have died prior to 1815.

(13) Major Price 10 Oct 1779- 03 Mar 1829 (from P&P) married (1) Sarah Waller. Major was named as an executor in his father’s will written in 1809, proven in 1815. P&P has a marriage bond date of 12 May 1801 in Pittsylvania Co, with marriage on 14 May (and I have 19 May for the marriage).
He married (2) Susan Lawson They married 13 Oct 1803 in Halifax Co., VA.

The following 2 children are not named in a Family Bible cited for the other children and have not been proven as descendants (although they are listed in Purse and Persons). Another source states that they might be daughters of this William’s son William, which makes more sense to me, so I put them there.
(14) Joyce Price m. William Soyars They married Feb 1805 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
(15) Hannah Price died unmarried d. by 1816.

Death

William’s will was written 04 Dec 1809, proven 20 Nov 1815 (Pittsylvania Co., Deed and Will Book 11, p. 415.). He names his wife Susanna and gives son Cuthbird Price 220 acres where William then lived. He names his son-in-law William McDaniel. He appoints sons Daniel Price, Maraday Price and Major Price executors. An inventory of William’s estate was recorded on 13 Dec 1815 (Pittsylvania Co. Accounts Current, 1812-1817, Book 5, p. 375).
