Died in that part of Marion County that became Lamar County, AL, 1867.
Richard was born in 1760. He passed away in 1831.
The first records of Richard Priddy appear in Halifax Co., VA. 1. Court Records, Book 12, page 179, July 1787-Richard Priddy was over charged, on his taxes, for 1 negro over 16 and one negro under 16 years of age for the year 1786. 2. Deed Book 18, page 186, 17 May 1799-George Priddy purchased 100 acres land in Halifax County on the fork of Bradley Creek adjacent to Richard Priddy and Dudley Glass. Recorded 22 July 1799.
Prior to 1795, Richard and Judith moved to Jefferson County, TN. He was involved in various suits, the first was recorded in February 1795. He served on jury duty various times until 1813. In July 1800, Court Minute Book No. 1, page 180, abill of sale from Richard Priddy to William Moore for one negro woman named Beck and a child named Chani was proven.
In 1806 he was appointed Inspector of Cotton.
In Court Minute Book No. 5, page 160, Richard sold fifty acres of land to John Riggs in 1810 or 1811. Prior to July 1813, Richard and family moved to Knox County where he signed his son Thomas J.'s War of 1812 muster and pay stating that he was a resident of Knox County, TN. Thomas J. enlisted with his father's permission at the age of 16.
In the National Archives Land Records Office, Suitland, MD, Certificate #2088, Land Office Huntsville, AL, shows Richard Priddy purchased NW Section, No. 27, Township NO. 5, Range 4W, a quarter section containing 159.04 acres for $2.00 a acre, total price $318.08 on 13 July 1818 as assignee of John Winston of Morgan Co., AL. John Winston's purchase was Certificate #4256. dated 12 Aug. showing his assignment to Richard Priddy.
Richard recorded the land 19 Sept. 1821. Jonathan Burleson also assigned 79.52 acres to Richard (Certificate #2045) for $159.04. Range 4W bordered the land of John Terry. This land was in Cotaco Co. which was later named Morgan Co. Richard applied for his Revolutionary War Pension as follows: The state of Alabama Morgan County: Be it remembered that heretofore to wit, set a circuit Court begun and held for the county & State aforesaid at the court house in the town of Somerville on the third Monday in april in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight a declaration inorder to be placed on the pension list was filed sworn to and ordered to be recorded and certified. Which is in the words and figures following, to wit, "The State of Alabama Morgan County ss. Declaration in order to be placed on the pension list under the act of the 18th March 1818 Circuit Court April Term 1828 on this the 22nd day of April 1828. Personally appeared in open Court being a court of Record, having power to fine and imprison and proceedings according to the court of the common law. Richard Priddy residen in said County aged sixty-eight years on the 30th Ju__ Who being first duly sworn according to law doth in his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the act of Congress of the 18th March 1818 and 1st May 1820--That he the said Richard Priddy inlisted for the tem of three years on the day of July or August in the year 1776 in the State of Virginia in the company commanded be Captain John Fleming in the first Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Isaac Read at first and afterwards by Colonel Richard Parker and last by Colonel _____ Davis in the line of the State of Virginia Northern continental establishment that he continued to serve in the said corps until the 2nd day of August 1779 when he was discharged from the service at Namapo in the State of New York, that he was at the Battle of Monmouth at that of the taking of Stony point fort on North River besides many other battles and skirmishes of less importance, during his term of service that he relinquishes every claim whatsover to a pension except the present that his name is not on the roll of any state except Virginia and that the following are his reasons for not making earlier application for a pension. That he has applied heretofore to persons for their assistance for that purpose but he has reason to believe that they were either ignorant of the forms and manner of making the application or that the papers did not reach the War department as he has not heard of any application having been made heretofore in his behalf altho old yet more able than ap present to provide by his personal labor for his support he was not then as he now is under the absolute necessity of asking the bounty government and consequently did not earlier apply to other persons more competent to aid him in making the application forhis pension after he ascertained he had failed in his first efforts. An in pursuance of the act of the 1st May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of the act of Congress entitled An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in ___ for me any property or securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than which is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. Schedule to follows, to wit, One blind mare worth $10.00 Three cows worth $10,00 One Bed & furniture worth $12.00 Five or six old plates $ .50 Three or four old knives & forks $ 1.00 Two dishes $ .50 6 cups & saucers $ .50 1 pot 1 oven 1 coffee pot $ 2.50 five or six old spoons $ .25 1 Bible $ .75 $38.00 R. Priddy That since the 1st March 1818 the following changes have been made in my property, that he has no knowledge of any other changes in his property since that time than such as are usual by the loss of some of his stock of horses by death and the necessary consumption of his cattle for the suppers of himself and family and that his is by occupation a farmer, that his family residing with him consists of his wife about sixty three years old very decrepet and unhealthy, one son about eighteen years old, one daughter about twenty years old that he is himself old and infirm and totally unable by his personal labor to support himself and that his increasing age diseases and infirmities render it impossible longer to provide a comfortable _______ without the assistance provided by his county for persons in his situation. Priddy And on the same day personally appeared in open court Thomas Hubbard and made oath in due form of law that he served as quarter master in the same regiment with Richard Priddy in the continental establishment during three years of the Revolutionary War, and was acquainted with said Priddy during his service and he states that said Priddy has made a correct statement as to his service in his declaration and that he was a good soldier during that time and was and is an honest and respectable citizen. Graham Clerk of the Circuit Court for the county of Morgan aforesaid do hereby certify that it appears to the statisfaction of the court that the said Richard Priddy did serve in the Revolutionary War, as stated in the preceeding declaration against the common enemy for the tem of nine months under on engagement in the continental establishment, I also certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto annexed, are truly copied from the records of the said county and I am further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is Thirty eight Dollars. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my han, and affixed my private seal (having no seal of office, at office on this 8th day of May 1828 and of American Independence the 52nd year. James B. Graham Clerk of the Circuit Court of Morgan County Revolutionary Claim, Acts March, 18, 1818, and May 1, 1820. 19.929 Alabama Richard Priddy of Morgan County in the State of Alabama who was a Sargeant in the Company commanded by Captain Fleming of the Regiment commanded by Colonel's Davis & Parker in the Virginia line, for the term of three years from July 1776 to August 1779. Inscribed on the Roll of Alabama at the rate of eight Dollars per month, to commence on the 13 day of May 1828. Certificate of Pension issued the 4th day of June 1828 and sent to the Hon. John McKee, Tuskaloosa, Ala. Arrears to 4th of Sept 1828-$32,96.
