can someone please confirm whom this ladies name is. There is conflicting evidence even within the narrative of this profile.

Biography Margaret was the daughter of Archibald Primrose of Burnbrae Systems of Heraldry by Alexander Nisbet, vol.1, Edinburgh, 1722, p.373.

Paul, James Balfour. "The Scots Peerage : founded on Wood's ed. of Sir Robert Douglas's Peerage of Scotland; containing an historical and genealogical account of the nobility of that kingdom", Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1906, Vol. III, Archive.org,

p. 485 and Janet Blaw.

so if this lady was indeed the daughter of Archibald Primrose would it not be that of Margret as other areas with this have her as the wife of Sir George of Carnock, which is not to be confused with his close relative Sir George Bruce of Culross.

Sir George Bruce married Margaret Primrose, daughter of Archibald Primrose. He died on 6 May 1625, He was the son of Sir Edward Bruce of Blairhall and Alison Reid. He bought Carnock from Sir A. Lindsay. He was invested as a Knight by King James VI. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Culross. In 1597 he built Culross Palace. Circa 1600 he bought Werty Gellett (renamed Broomhall) from John Pitcairn of that Ilk. He was a member of the Committee to negotiate union with England in 1604. He lived at Carnock, Fife, Scotland.

Working my way through the Male Bruce Line, starting in Australia / South Africa (yes we are here in Australia and South Africa and descend from the Royal Bruce Line through Clackmannan / Carnock through to present day) I have noticed that there are names that seem to cross over and in fact get confused with each other, the two Sir Georges of Culross and Carnock as prime examples. I have also noted that there is a fair bit of ‘We assume that this is the Bruce of a charter’ or ‘possibly it the Bruce named’ or the best one yet ‘we assume it is this Robert Bruce’. The last time I checked history was not made of assumptions, or possibilities, it was set by true articles, in these cases the Royal Charters of the time. So could you please let me know the correct name for this lady so I can move forward with my family tree.

Kindest regards

Scott Jeffrey, JP

Having considered everything I think it must have been John Burke who got the name wrong. Doubtless other secondary sources copied Burke, as we find so often. I am confident that the lady herself knows her own name (!) and has given it in her Testament. That is surely conclusive original evidence.

Two points,

1) SP and Nisbet both refer to Euphan or Euphame while Burke refers to her as Margaret. Should one prefer one name over the other? 2) Burke names the father 'Archibald' and Nisbet along wth SP vol 3, p. 485 do the same. SP vol 7, p 214, however, says the father is 'David' and the mother Janet Blaw.

Yes, there is confusion over her name. The Book of Bruce: ancestors and descendants of King Robert of Scotland (1907) calls her Margaret. We have therefore given her both Christian names on this page until this can be further clarified. Archibald is definitely her father (as it was he who married Janet Blaw). David is her brother. Unfortunately you can find many errors in the SP.

No worries . . . I had started to update her parents' profiles and just wanted to clarify. Her mother shows she married both an 'Archibald' and a 'David' so I imagine the one to David should be disconnected. I'll post a comment on that profile.

Primrose-411 and Primrose-14 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate

Reliance upon Burke's Peerage is not good. It is OK as a general or even a rough guide but must be further researched using primary and other secondary sources.

I added Scots Peerage and cleaned the profile somewhat but more work is needed . . . .

So Margaret's father was almost 60 when she was born? I think not. This is a shocking mess and demonstrates that anything in Burke's must be further researched (as the famous J. Horace Round constantly said). Original sources are best, if possible.

I am in the same position as Andrew White. I have no data on Primrose-17, and have no idea how I became a profile manager. I will also resign as a manager, and leave it to others to solve this puzzle.

It appears there is not agreement about correct parentage, and or dates. I have no documentation so resign as manager. This may help others (I hope).

Primrose-17 and Primrose-14 do not represent the same person because: The dates are wildly different. Primrose-17 seems to have been born nearly 70 years after her mother's death. There is no basis for a merge here.

I have completed the merges and sourced the correct parents. I deleted the extraneous material after the merge but the bio will need to be rewritten. Please let me know if you need assistance with this.

Primrose-17 and Primrose-40 appear to represent the same person because: a merge of Primrose-40 into Primrose-17 has been initiated by Sir Wm Arbuthnot and I concur by removing the created Unmerged Match
