Biography

Richard Prince 1789 (Father of George Prince 1815)

Richard Prince was the first child born to William and Margaret Firman Prince, at Icklingham, England, on the 28th of July, 1789. He was the oldest of thirteen children which consisted of four boys and nine girls.

Richard told of his boyhood that was handed down through the children. He told about the time he was a shepherd boy in England. The shepherds didn't drive the sheep, they led them.

The feed on the moors was plentiful and the owners of the sheep usually grazed them on their own land. They kept them together by means of huddles, which was moved from place to place. This way the sheep fertilized the land as they grazed.

One night a storm came up and the winds blew with such fury it covered the whole countryside. It would have been fatal for anyone to have been out in that storm. The frightened sheep huddled together to keep warm and secure during the night as the bitter blasts continued to pound over the moors.

The next morning when the boys looked out upon the beautiful calm, snow covered world, the sheep were completely covered with snow drifts. The boys thought their flocks had smothered and perished in the dreadful storm. Where the sheep had huddled for the night, was a huge drift that broke the smooth surface of the moors. When the boys came closer, they could see little streams of steam rising and so many tiny holes, it gave them hope. They soon had every man on the place digging frantically with the boys to uncover the frightened sheep. Soon the frightened sheep began to stir. The holes in the snow made it possible for the sheep to breathe and they were nearly all alive.

Richard was an ambitious young man and at the age of 24 he married his sweetheart Mary Harrold on the 23rd of June, 1813 at All Saints Church at Fordham, England.

Mary was the daughter of William and Lucy Last Harrold and was born the 5th of February, 1792 at Lawshaw, England. They raised eleven children as two of them died as young children.

Richard died 4 August, 1835 at the age of 46 years and Mary died on 2 March, 1866 at the age of 74 and is buried at Lawshaw, England.
