Project: Profile Improvement/Draft wikipedia

The following is a DRAFT of a suggested policy/standard around the use of Wikipedia copy. The purpose of this page is to support discussion among the members of the Style Committee.

Use of Wikipedia Text in WikiTree Profiles

The primary purpose of a WikiTree profile is to convey family and genealogical information about a person. It's fine to summarize or highlight key moments of an ancestor's life, but it's not necessary, desirable or a good use of site resources to copy/paste entire, or even large amounts, of a Wikipedia article into a Wikitree profile. Instead, create a link and put that link under Sources. For example, see: http://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Stewart-1166.

Short quotations from a Wikipedia article relating to specific aspects of the profiled individual's history may be appropriate as a convenience to the reader, and it is permissible to do so under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. If you do quote a Wikipedia article, be sure to cite it. Each Wikipedia page has a link in the left-hand column (under Tools) for "How to cite this page." Please use that language when citing a Wikipedia page.

For those merging duplicate profiles and cleaning up resulting narrative, when you come across something that is obviously Wikipedia text, please replace it with a link to the appropriate Wikipedia page.

Wikipedia copy/summary should be at most one very short paragraph, except for genealogy details (parents/spouses/children, names/dates/locations), in order to indicate the source of the information used in the profile. Historical context or major life events can be found through the links to wikipedia or other online sources.
