Biography

Henry Propst lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina. See Appalachia Project.

John Henry Propst was born March 15, 1846 in Lincolnshire. John Propst is the son of Jonas Propst and Lovinia Hallman.

According to the 1850 census, John was 3 years old and living with his mother, Lovenia, 28, father Jonas, 24, and two siblings, Mary Ann, 5, and Barbara, 0, in Catawba County, North Carolina. The census lists his birthplace as Lincolnshire.[1]

The 1860 Federal census finds John Henry, 14, living with his parents, Jonas, 40, and Lavinia Elizabeth), and five siblings in Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina.[2]

John, age 17 years, enlisted in the confederate army on March 21, 1862 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was mustered into Company F, of the 23rd regiment, Infantry as a private. He was discharged on October 20,1863 and survived the Civil War as a veteran. (see military records)

John H, Propst married Sallie Spencer on December 22, 1867 in Catawba, North Carolina.[3] [4]

The couple; John, 24, and Sallie, 17, with their new son Thomas D. are residing in Hickory Tavern, Catawba, North Carolina with two others: Emeline Price, 31, and Gilbert Price, 10. John is a farm laborer.[5]

In the 1880 census, Hickory, Catawba County, Henry J., 34, is residing with wife Sarah, 28, and children; Thomas, 11, Frank, 8, Emma, 5, and Lafayette, 2 years old. Henry cannot write. [6]

J. Henry Propst passed away April 16, 1923 in Hickory Township, Catawba, North Carolina. [7] He is buried in the Millers Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hickory.[8] Find A Grave: Memorial #30023847
