Biography

Isobell was born about 1715, but this is approximate and based on her marriage in 1735.

Who Isobell Proudfoot might be is as yet unknown. There are three, possibly four, families of this name living at this time. Births are registered, generally, in the Methven Parish and Methven is the adjoining Parish to Moneydie. Isobell likely originated in one of these families and there are records of four by her name born at around the probable year of birth. Also of note is a record of an Agnes Straiton marrying a Laurence Proudfoot on 19 Jun 1730.^[1] Agnes is recorded as being the daughter of a John Straiton "in Pitlandy" which is a farm just north of Moneydie. Laurence though is recorded as of the Parish of Ringortan; the same as Isobell.

She married John Straiton on 3 Mar 1735 at Moneydie, Perthshire. In the record from the Parish Register (copy available) he placed banns on the 31 January 1735. In these banns, placed at the Parish church at Moneydie, he is stated to be the son of Thomas Straiton in Whitehill and Isobell is stated to be of the Parish of "Ringortan".^[2] There is sufficient correlation in the Parish Registers to indicate that this was the Parish of Redgorton, immediately adjacent to Moneydie to the south.

The family appears to be living in the Parish of Auchtergaven, immediately joining Moneydie to the north, after 1745.

Family and Legacy

They had a number of children, of which recorded are:

Janet Straiton; b. Aug 1736, bap. 29 Aug 1736 at Moneydie, Perthshire.^[3]

Thomas Straiton; b. Feb 1738, bap. 5 Mar 1738 at Moneydie, Perthshire.^[4]

Jean Straiton; b. Jun 1740, bap. 15 Jun 1740 at Moneydie, Perthshire.^[5]

Mary Isobell Stratton; b. Mar 1743, bap. 13 Mar 1743 at Moneydie, Perthshire.^[6] The difference in the name seems to be related to a new Parish minister and the handwriting is significantly different in the register for this entry to that prior. John is still "in Whitehill".

Barbra or Bathia Straton; b. and bap. Auchtergaven Parish, registered at Moneydie Parish 11 Jun 1749.^[7] It this listing she is listed as Bathia although it can easily be read as Barbra. The transcript indicates the listing is a registration of a birth and baptism in the Parish of Auchtergaven to John Straton of Whitehill in the Parish of Moneydie. The inconsistency of name suggests he wasn't there at the time and was not personally known to the Minister.
