Biography

Margaret was born in 1691. She was the daughter of Richard Prouty and Damaris Torrey. She passed away in 1768

A photocopy of the Last Will and Testament of Margaret Prouty can be found on Ancestry. The Will is dated January 22, 1768,[1] with Margaret writing that she is "of good health and sound memory" so, not on death's doorstep. The Will was presented for Probate on February 19, 1770. The Will is very short so I am placing the transcription of it here:

In the Name of God, Amen. The twenty second day of January anno Domini 1768. I Margaret Prouty of Scituate in the county of Plymouth in New England, spinster being in good health and sound memory, do make & ordain this my Last Will & Testament in the manner & form following hereby revoking null and void all former Wills by me made.

First & principally I give my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and my body to be buried in a Christian manner after my decease, and as touching my worldly goods I give and bequeath & dispose of in the following manner.

I give to my son Nehemiah Prouty all my movable estate, and wearing apparel, he paying all my just debts, funeral charges, & all costs in the probate office.

I give to my son Nehemiah Prouty & his wife Lettice Prouty the use & improvement of all my real estate on both sides of the highway where I now dwell, during their natural lives.

I give & bequeath unto my grandson Jonathan Prouty all of my real estate, to him and his heirs & assigns forever. My Will is that if my grandson Jonathan Prouty shall die before he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years or shall die without any legal heirs, then my Will is that my real estate after the decease of my son Nehemiah Prouty & his wife shall be equally divided between the surviving heirs of my son Nehemiah Prouty.

Lastly, I do hereby ordain & appoint Nathaniel Clap Esq. & W. Joseph Benson to be the executors of this my last Will & Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day & year first above written. Margaret (X her mark) Prouty, (seal)

Signed, sealed & declared by Margret Prouty to be her last Will & Testament in the presence of us witness: Nathaniel Brooks, Simeon Brooks, Sheazashub Brown

Her inventory was taken on 20 February 1770 in Scituate.[1]

In 1771, an account of her estate by Nathaniel Clapp and Joseph Benson was recorded which included, funeral charges, and administration fees.[2]
