Biography

John was born about 1801. John Pugh ... He passed away in 1879. [1]

      • There is NO proof that Martin is the father of John Pugh***

Research conducted in 2004 states John Pugh was born in Shippensburg, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. The same research says that other oral histories states that John was born in Wales, and lived with either his parents or grandparents. Those same oral histories say a brother was lost overboard on the ship coming over to the United States, and that his father's name was either Mark or Martin.

The family resided at the P.H. Martin place, the Kinniard Place (S.C. Rotz's) and William Martin Spring. All three locations are near Edenville, Franklin County, PA, near where Fort McCord Road meets Mountain Road.

John was a stage coach driver, and his regular route was between Chambersburg , Fort Loudoun and Shippensburg. He met Elizabeth Pipher at the Miller's hotel, which was a regular stop on his route.

Later in life, he engaged in farming, gardening and lime burning to earn a livelihood.

Family history says that four of his sons joined the union army together during the Civil War and served with the 21st PA Cavalry. This site lists Mark, Henry George as enlisting on 1 Aug 1863 for a 6 month enlistment. http://www.pa-roots.com/pacw/cavalry/21stcav6mos/21stcavcoi6mos.html

Mark (Martin) is listed as captured, date unknown. Henry is listed as absent, sick, at muster out on Feb 20, 1864. George is listed as the Farrier and that he "Transferred to Company D, 182d, 3 years' Regiment P. V., January 26, 1864" and served until July 8, 1865. The site below states that George "Mustered out with Company, July 8, 1865" http://www.pa-roots.com/pacw/cavalry/21stcav/21stcavcod3yrs.html This site lists the major events and battles of the 21st PA Cavalry, http://civilwarintheeast.com/USA/PA/PA21cav.php

Pugh-1292 and Pugh-444 appear to represent the same person because: Hello I have been working on the Pugh family for years I am related to John's son James Pugh who married Rachel Miller and moved to Richland County, Ohio. I would love to merge our John's if you would like
