Biography

John Pugh (Nichols) was the son of John Nichols and Ann Pugh. He was born in about 1802 at Prospect, New South Wales, Australia^[1].

As his parents did not marry until 8 April 1810, he was legally known as John Pugh and all except two of his children were registered as Pugh. By the time of his death it seems that he was known as John Pugh Nichols.

His siblings were Ann Kellick (born Nichols), Charles Nichols, Sophia Philp (born Nichols), Martha Nichols, Mary Nichols, Martha Windley (born Nichols), Amelia Hughs (born Nichols), Susannah Victoria Kinsella (born Nichols), Joseph Nichols, Elizabeth Elspeth (Eliza) Williams (born Nichols), Sarah Margaret Johns (born Nichols) and Thomas B Nichols.

He married Rebecca Moss on 17 January 1825^[2]at St Luke's Church of England, Liverpool. Their children were John Pugh Nichols, Maria Emma (Pugh) Keevers, Ann Louisa (Nichols) Bradney/Clarke, William Thomas Nichols, Eliza Jane (Nichols) Inskip, Rebecca (Pugh) Grahams, George James Nichols, Sarah Jane Pugh, Matilda (Pugh) Trivett, Clara Catherine (Pugh) Hall and Lucy Mary (Pugh) Spinks.

There is a birth record for a child named Emma M Pugh born on the same day as his daughter Maria^[3], but it would seem that this is a duplicate, wrongly transcribed, record for Maria as her middle name was Emma.

John Pugh Nichols died on 23 January 1861 at Jamberoo aged 58 and was buried at Jamberoo Old Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
