"Chesty", as he was known, earned 56 decorations in his lengthy Marine Corp career that spanned almost four decades, including commanding the First Marine Division in World War II and Korea. He was the only Marine ever to receive five Navy Crosses, the nation's second highest recognition for bravery.
He joined the Marines in 1918 and spent his early years fighting bandits in Nicaragua, where he earned his first Navy Cross and his first Gold Star (in lieu of a second Navy Cross.) He also served in China prior to World War II. He earned two more Navy Crosses in World War II, for his actions in Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester, and received the Legion of Merit for his actions during the capture of Peleliu.
He earned his fifth Navy Cross in Inchon, Korea. He also earned a Silver Star, a Distinguished Service Cross and a second Legion of Merit.[1] in the same conflict.
He married Virginia Montague Evans in 1937 in Christchurch, Virginia.[2] They had one son and one daughter together.
He is perhaps best know for his memorable quotes.[3] some of which are quite pithy.
“Retreat! We’re just attacking in a different direction.”
“We’ve been looking for the enemy for some time now. We’ve finally found him. We’re surrounded. That simplifies the problem.”
“Son, when the Marine Corps wants you to have a wife, you will be issued one.”
He passed away in 1971 at the VA Hospital in Hampton, Virginia.[4]
