Biography

Mary Purefoy was the daughter of Edward Purefoy and Anne Fettiplace. [1][2][3][4]

It is considered she was born circa 1520 (see Research Notes below), probably at Shalstone, Buckinghamshire, the ancestral home of her parents.

On 28 October 1540 she married Thomas Thorne (or Dorne) of Dunham in Shalstone, Buckinghamshire.[3][4][5] They had at least the following children:

  • Anthony[2][3][4]
  • Edward[2][3][4]
  • Thorney[2][6]
  • Anna, baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 1 November 1550[6][7]
  • Katherine,[2][3][4] baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 11 September, 1551 and married Francis Worsley[3][4][6][8]
  • Arthur, baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on15 May 1552[6][9]
  • William, baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 6 December 1558[6][10]
  • Suzanna (Susan),[2][3][4] baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 5 March 1559 and married Roger Dudley[6][11]
  • Robert,[2][3][4] baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 3 May 1560[6][12]
  • Isabell, baptised at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 3 June 1561[13] and married Basill Law[6][14]
  • Jane,[3][4] who married John Hender[3][4]

Mary's husband, Thomas, died in 1588 and was buried at Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire on 9 November that year.[6][15] His will dated 29 October 1588 was proved 9 May 1589. An abstract of the will by Mary Kingsbury Talcott[6] shows that Mary was the main legatee, being left the family house at Yardley Hastings, on condition that on her death she bequeath it to their children and heirs. The following children are mentioned in the will, indicating they were living at the time: Robert, Edward, son Hender (transcribed as "Pender?" by Mary Kingsbury Talcott - John Hender, husband of his daughter Jane), Basill Law (husband of daughter Isabell), Francis Worsley (husband of daughter Katherine), Arthur, Susan.

A record of Mary's death has not been found, however she was still living on 9 May 1589.[3][4]

Research Notes

Will of Thomas Dorne or Thorne, of Yardley Hastings

Please note that this will should not be confused with that of Thomas Thorne alias Dorne, Gentleman of Passenham, Northamptonshire dated 1 November 1588, probate granted 5 December 1588. This is a different Thomas Thorne/Dorne, whose wife had died - he asks to buried near her at Passenham - and who has a very different immediate family.[16]

Date of Birth

It is not known when Mary was born, however we can assess it was circa 1520 - 1525, based on the following facts:

  • She married on 28 October 1540.[3] If she was between 15 and 20 years at this time she would have been born between 1520 and 1525.
  • Mary's brother William was born in 1524.[2] The date of birth of other siblings is not known, but the date of William's birth confirms that the above range for Mary's birth would be feasible.

Additional Daughters

In Thomas Thorne's will[6] there is a section referring to his children and grandchildren. As was customary at the time, grandchildren were referred to as children of their father without mention of their mothers. Two son-in-laws are mentioned: Paull Strelley and Andrew Plume,[6] but which of Thomas' daughters they married is not yet known. One may be his daughter Anna, listed above but the other is not known.

This profile was identified in a trail from Gateway Ancestor Gov. Thomas Dudley to one or more surety barons (see trails here). I will soon be adding the Magna Carta Project as a co-manager of this profile and will be adding a project box and project section to the bio. This profile will still need development by the project.

Purefoy-2 and Purefoy-72 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date and pace, same parents, same siblings, same husband, but have different death dates
posted on Purefoy-72 (merged) by Becky Troth
This is a duplicate of Purefoy-2, EXCEPT for the dates. DOB and DOD are off by a generation. If these dates are correct, this cannot be Purefoy-2, and the parents, siblings and husband are wrong. Anne Fettiplace is too old to have been the mother. Perhaps this Mary is a daughter of Mary Purefoy and Thomas Thorne? Research is needed.

Purefoy-62 and Purefoy-2 appear to represent the same person because: Seem to be the same woman.
