Biography

Jesse was born on 28 April 1754 in Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Puryear and Margaret (Loving) Puryear.

Jesse died at the age of 79 on 8 October 1833 in Green County, Kentucky.

From Pension #s 35590, 12, 289 : In the Spring of 1776, Jesse Puryear enlisted as a private in Williamsburg, Virginia, int he company of Captain John Pleasants. Later, he re-enlisted for three years in the same regiment, then commanded by Col. Davis. Near the end of his three years of service, he was detached from this regiment and attached to John Neville's Regiment in South Carolina. He was discharged at Chesterfield Court House, Virginia.

During his service, Jesse fought in the battles of Germantown, Brandywine, Trenton, Monmouth and Charlestown where he was taken prisoner by the British for about two months. He escaped and returned to his old Davis regiment and was subsequently discharged.

Research Notes

In Jesse'e pension application he mentions his wife is deceased, and he has a daughter Peggy who lives with him. in the 1830 census there is a female 30-30 with two younger girls.
