Biography

Amos was a Friend (Quaker)

PLEASE READ THE RESEARCH NOTES AT THE BOTTOM BEFORE EDITING (possibly at least three "Amos Pyles") AND BEAR WITH ME AS "WE" TRY AND SORT THROUGH THIS "PYLE" (pun intended)! Stradling-375 9SEP2023

So far, I've identified four Amos Pyles that are confusing things. (Stradling-375, 15SEP2023) Hope this helps your research.

Time Line

I've decided to try and establish a time & place line for each of the "Amos Pyle"s in order to assist with differentiating and to help keep them separate.

"Amos Pyle #1": The majority of information that I've found currently regards this particular Amos Pyle - WT1407 (also credited as the son of Moses & Mary (Cook) and married Ruth Stubbs) so I'll start here and link to the others below:

  1. 1772 - Year is best guess, believe birth near New Castle, PA as his parents (who married in 1741 in London Grove MM were in that area) when he was thought to have been born, 1767 they were in New Castle cty, 1779 settled in Little Britain area and Moses died there one month later, parents are an established fact as noted in sources below (some facts and some, my opinion)
  2. 1792 & 93 - announced marriage intentions and married Ruth Stubbs in1793 in Chester cty area (one source says Little Britain?)
  3. 1794 - first child (Sarah) born, records say Little Britain, all six children were born on this farm in Little Britiain per Quaker records from 1794-1806, names of 6 children: Sarah, Daniel, John, Phebe, Joseph & Amos (no other names listed)
  4. 1800 - Census shows in Little Britain, Lancaster, PA
  5. 1807 - Certificates show "removal" & "admittance" to Deer Creek MM, Harford, MD
  6. 1812 - Sarah married Mordicai Thomas, marriage document states that Amos & Ruth were residents of or living in Harford cty, MD
  7. 1825 - son John married Abi Good (Amos & Ruth were both marked as deceased in the Quaker marriage document)

"Amos Pyle #2": This Amos Pyle is profiled as Pyle-3077 and he was born as a son of Caleb Pyle and Sophia (House) Pyle and he married Rachael (Wright) Pyle. Time line tells us that he spent most of his time around the Beaver (which became Lawrence) county area. Birth date/place might be mixed up with "Amos Pyle #1" (no actual, factual, original source found yet).

"Amos Pyle #3": Our #3 is still a work in progress but he married Anna Michener (28 JAN 1808 - 12 JUL 1859) with four children: MIchener (DY in 1833), Francis (b 1834), Joseph (b 1836) and Orpha (b 1839).

"Amos Pyle #4": Yeah, found another one: This Amos Pyle was a son of Daniel Pyle and Alice (Trego) Pyle and was born 7 AUG 1833. He married Mary Margaret (McCartey) Pyle and spent most of his life in and around Drumore, Lancaster cty, Pennsylvania.

Amos was born about 1772. He was a son of Moses Pyle and Moses's second wife (after first wife Mary (Darlington) Pyle had passed) who was Mary (Cook) Pyle.

Amos Pyle was in a family history showing that his parents were Moses and Mary (Cook) Pyle.[1]

Amos Pyle and Ruth Stubbs (daughter of Daniel & Ruth Stubbs - the latter deceased) announced their marriage intentions for the first time at the Nottingham MM, Chester, PA on 24 November 1792 in Chester, Pennsylvania.[2]

Amos Pyle, child of Moses Pyle and Mary Pyle (both deceased), married Ruth Stubbs (daughter of Daniel & Ruth [latter deceased]) on 10 January 1793 in Little Britain, Pennsylvania as was recorded by the Nottingham MM, Chester, Pennsylvania.[3]

Amos Pyle was recorded in a church event on 26 January 1793 in Chester, Pennsylvania when Mary King reported that she had attended the marriage of Amos and Ruth Stubbs and "it was orderly accomplished".[4]

In the 1800 census, Amos Piles was in Little Britain, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[5]

Joseph Pyle, child of Amos Pyle and Ruth Pyle, was born on 18 August 1803 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. [NOTE: Source page shows the birth dates of Amos & Ruth's six children: Sarah, Daniel, John, Phebe, Joseph and Amos.][6]

Amos and Ruth (Stubbs) Pyle were noted in a Lancester, PA directory of Mennonite members along with his son Daniel (and his wife Alice Trego), their in-laws (William and Betty Tego) and grandchildren.[7]

Amos & Ruth Pyle and their 6 children; Sarah Pyle, Daniel Pyle, John Pyle, Phebe Pyle, Joseph Pyle and Amos Pyle were recorded in a church event (Certificate of Removal to Deer Creek) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[8]

Amos Pyle was recorded in a church event on 1 April 1807 in Eastland when he requested a certificate for himself, his wife and six minor children to Deer Creek MM.[9]

Amos & Ruth Pyle and their children; Sarah Pyle, Daniel Pyle, John Pyle, Phebe Pyle, Joseph Pyle and Amos Pyle were recorded in a church event (Certificate dated 9 MAY 1807 requesting admittance) at the Deer Creek MM on 25 June 1807 in Harford, Maryland.[10]

Amos & Ruth Pyle's child, Sarah Pyle married Mordicai Thomas (son of John and Sarah, his wife) of Harford county, Maryland, son of John Thomas and Sarah, his wife, on 29 April 1812 in Fawn, Maryland. [NOTE: Amos & Ruth were noted as being from (or living in) Harford cty, Maryland at the time. This is an original Quaker marriage document.][11]

Amos Pyle's child, John Pyle married Abi Good on 17 March 1825 in West Grove.(Both of John's parents were deceased at the time.)[12]

Research Notes

BEWARE - There is another Amos Pyle (1772-1815) who was the son of Caleb & Sopia (House) Pyle and married Rachael Wright and lived in the Lawrence county, PA area. Stradling-375, 23JAN2023

I have recently come across another Amos Pyle (which means there might be three or more). So, here is where we stand right now: 1) Amos Pyle, son of Caleb & Sophia, married Rachel Wright, lived in Lawrence cty, is the "Amos" that died (noted above) on 6 NOV 1815 in Lawrence cty 2) Amos Pyle, son of Moses & Mary, married Ruth Stubbs (JAN1793) in Chester, PA although one source says they were married in Little Britain in Lancaster cty, lived around Lancaster cty (Little Britain MM), his daughter Sarah married Mordicai Thomas in 1812 and parents listed as living in Hartford cty, Maryland at that time, found admittance of above to Deer Creek MM, Hartford, MD in 1807 3) Amos Pyle, unknown parents, married Ann Michener (noted in New Garden MM, Chester, PA), had 4 children (Michener b 1833 & d 9months, Frances b 1834, Joseph b 1836 and Orpha b 1839, found tax paper for 1781 London Grove in Chester, 1779 Census in London Grove Stradling-375, 9 SEP 2023
