We will have to be careful in using the printed pedigrees of this family: SUMMARY OF THE EARLIEST QUARLES RECORDS By R.H. Gwyn
During recent research into the Quarles family it has become apparent that the published pedigrees are full of errors, and my advice to those interestd in the pedigree is to approach everything they see in print with an open mind. The errors of the published pedigrees are so numerous that it is waste of time to deal with them in detail, but something must be said about them.
The locating of the early Quarleses in Northamtonshire at Ufford, it utterly wrong. Had they lived in that county their wills would have been registered inthe county or in London, but the first on record is that of George Quarles(the Auditor) who died in 1535-36. In the Histories of the Northants there is no mention of a Quarles prior to the time of the said George. The placing of John quarles, the draper of London, as a son of George (the Auditor) is incorrect, as from the will of the latter it is known that he left one son only, viz; Francis. The placing of Thomas and John (both of Norwich) as the sons of Francis Quarles of Ufford is wrong, as they were both adults and freemen of Norwich beofre Francis had married. Those are the outstanding errors. I have not seen the Quarles pedigrees recorded in the Heralds College and I have not seen the wills which may be registered at Norwich the latter should be mine of information. All Quarles wills (and most administrations) registered in Lond have been inspected.[2]
