Gladys Evelyn, the eldest child and daughter of Edwin Quayle and his wife Mary Frances [nee Thornley] was born in Rusholme, Manchester in August 1890. We know nothing of her childhood, But she was still a child, with three younger siblings, when her mother died, and no more than 10 when her father remarried. Her name [ Quayle, Gladys E.] appears in the "Register of Students at the Department of Education in the University of Manchester 1890 - 1911". We do not know when she began, of if she completed, her studies there, but we do know that in April 1912, when she would have been 21, Gladys married James Edward Platt, and during the following half-dozen years they had two children,; Edwin Nevil Thornley, and Pamela Margery.
However, James seems not to have been an easy man to get on with.
Family Legend has it, that, after a row with her husband, Gladys left him, and we must assume that she took her two children with her. However, he fell ill - quite seriously, with pneumonia. The news reached Gladys and she dutifully hastened back home to look after him. Unfortunately, another lady whose name we do not know, had beaten her to it. It was the final straw. At some point, yet to be verified, the couple divorced, and Gladys, intelligent, attractive, and very lively, seems to have enjoyed her life, and by the time both her children were in their teens, Gladys, at a dance-class, met a handsome young sailor. They married.
The Certificate recording their marriage is interesting: it contains several inaccuracies. 1. The age of Gladys Evelyn Quayle is given as 37 rather than 42. 2. Gladys Evelyn Quayle is described as a spinster. 3. Her father's name is given as "James Edward Platt, Bank Clerk". In other words, Gladys knocked five years off her age, and wrongly stated that her first husband was her father. She was, however, a lively, amusing, and loveable being whose escape from her first marriage was a sensible act. Charles proved to be an excellent husband, much respected in the community.
Gladys Quayle …
She passed away about 1962. [1]
