Biography

John Quigley was born in 1650.[1] He was the son of John Quigley aka Cugley.[2] John Cugley was transported to Virginia by Jenkin Osbone who collected 50 acres for transporting Cugley on 9 July, 1635.[3]

John married Elinor Spense (born 1647 in NORTHUMBERLAND, VA, COLONY).[2] Their daughter, Ann Quigley, was born in 1680 in Westmoreland, Rappahannock, Virginia.[1] Rappahannock County was founded in 1656 from part of Lancaster County, and became extinct in 1692 when it was separated to form Essex County and Richmond County.[4]

John Quigley had a one acre block on Middle Street in Saint Mary's City, between the State House the lot of Nicholas Painter, which was one of the taverns of the town.[5]

Commercial Transactions

  • On 12 June 1669, John Quigley of Westmoreland County sold to William Moxley of Mobjack Bay in Virginia one third part in partnership betwixt Patrick Spence, William Bishop and John Quigley being 1050 acres in Westmoreland, signed John Quigley, Elenor Quigley, witnessed James Steward and Samuel Vaughan, Received by Westmoreland County Court 2 February, 1669/70. p.392.[6] This transaction is seen elsewhere, without Elenor Quigley's signature being recorded: "12 June 1669 John Quigley of Westmoreland County unto William Moxley of Mobjack Bay in Virginia. For a valuable consideration. One third of a tract of land in partnership betwixt Mr. Patrick Spence, William Bishopp and my self, being 1050 acres upon the great runn in the horse path goeing to Nomeny. Signed by John Quigley. Wit: James (X) Stewart, Samuell Vaughan, John (X) Sprigg."[7]
  • On 25 October 1672, John Quigley sold to Morris Veale 200 acres (in Westmoreland County, Virginia) that had originally been patented by Richard Griffin.[8]
  • Captain John Quigley was the contractor responsible for building the new State House of colonial Maryland which was erected between 1674 and October, 1676. The contract price for the State House and a jail was 330,000 lbs. of tobacco, of which Saint Mary's City contributed 100,000 lbs.[5] On 6 June 1674, John Quigley "of the Citty of St Maries in the Province of Maryland merchant" agreed that if he defaulted on the conditions set by the Act of Assembly made at the Session of Assembly on 19 May, 1673, for building the State House and prison he agreed to pay to Charles Calvert 50,000 lbs. of tobacco.[9]
  • The patents for land issued by the Secretary of the Colony serving as the colonial Land Office hold a patent issued on 20 November, 1678, of a Land Grant to John Quigley for 80 acres on the north west side of Appamattock Creek, Westmoreland County (view image of Land Grant).[10]
  • In 1678, payment was due to Capn John Quigley, in St Maryes, of twenty thousand pounds of Tobacco for goods and services rendered to the Province of Maryland.[11]
  • In June 1680 (on 30th?), a petition from John Quigley for 80 foot of the Country's houses was read in the House of Burgesses of Virginia and it was ordered that he have a grant for fifty years of those house upon the conditions that he began the repairs of the houses within one year and finished the repairs in two years and paid one "Eare of Indian Corne" annually for an Acknowledgement and constantly kept the houses in good repair and left them in good repair at the Expiration of the lease.[12]
  • John Spencer, Gent, son of Nicholas Spencer, dec'd., of the Parish of Washington in Westmoreland Co. 820 acres in the said county & parish, which is a parcel out of the several patents formerly belonging to John & Samuel Vaughan, who died without heirs and sd. land escheated. The sd. Nicholas Spenser by the consent of Wm. Bridges & Elizabeth, his wife, John Quigley & Ellinor, his wife, & all other persons pretending any right to the said land by right of heirship or preference, escheated same, which land was resurveyed by Alexander Spense & Theodorick Bland, Surveyors. Beginning at a branch out of Potomac River dividing this from land of Thos. Pope. Dec. 12, 1690.[13]
  • "3-187: Nathaniel Pope of Westmoreland 23 Jan 1706 set forth that John Quigley died seized of 330 A. in said Co. and by Will gave 1/3 to his bro. Gerrard Quigley, 1/3 to his neice Mrs. Allice Lincoln, & 1/3 to his Godson, John Spencer. Allice Lincoln died without heirs & her 1/3 came to Gerrard who died seized of 2/3 or 220 A. Certificate by Jacob Martin of said Co. made it appear that land at this time was his by m. with Sarah wid. of John Scott, alledging Right of Eschear. Pope consented to decline further pretentions. It appeared that Scott paid Thomas Mountjoy for land and had deed for same. Scott by Will devised land. Escheat Deed to Jacob Martin and & his wife Sarah and after decease of Jacob & Sarah, land to heirs of John Scott & for want of such heirs to Sarah & heirs of her body, to Jacob & his heirs forever. On Mattox Cr. in Westmoreland Co. Lands by Quigley divided as follows: 150 A. to William ffreck & Rich'd Hills 3 Sept. 1651 & derived to Quigley; 100 A, to William ffreck 18 Mar. 1662 and conveyed to said John Quigley; & 80 A. to John Quigley 20 Nov. 1678. 16 March. 1707."[14]

Possible Relatives

John Quigley left 110 acres to his brother Gerrard Quigley.[15] A Garrett Quigley, Gentleman of Carlow, Ireland, is listed in 1697 in the Index to the prerogative wills of Ireland, 1536-1810 (1897) p389 https://archive.org/details/indextoprerogati00vica

  • Cecil County "Mount Quigley — 300 acres, surveyed September 22, 1686, for Charles Quigley" p. 343. Charles Quigley was on the St George. James Bodkin of Charles County bequeathed personalty to his "cousin" Charles Quigley in a will drawn on 23rd August 1683 and probated on 12th December, 1683, Book 4, p.184. [17]

An inventory for John Quigley in Dorchester in 1682 is listed in Maryland's Colonial Probate Records - Liber 7 C, folio 313.[18]

John died on 23 January, 1706, in Westmoreland, Virginia.[2]
