Biography

William Quinby/Quimby was born at Salisbury, Massachusetts, the eldest son of Robert Quinby and Elizabeth (Osgood) Quinby. His family moved to the adjoining town of Amesbury, when he was a child.

William took the oat of allegiance on December 20, 1677, at Amesbury, before Major Robert Pike. He was a member of the training band in 1680, and in that year, his name appears in a petition to the General Court from Amesbury in relation to a military officer.

William's wife given name was Sarah. William was mentioned in his grandfather Osgood's in 1700, as a living descendant. But, the order appointing his brother, Robert, as a guardian of his property is dated September 26, 1694, and begins: "William Quinby, being lately taken or killed by the Indians, his death not made certain ...."

From the administration papers (shown in their entirety in Genealogical History of the Quinby (Quimby) Family in England and America, Henry Cole Quinby Tuttle Company, 1915, beginning page 81) it appears that the children of William and Sarah Quinby were:

Elizabeth Quinby, born March 6, 1689, at Amesbury;

William Quinby, born October 8, 1693, appointed the ward of Josiah Clark, when his father went missing; became the ancestor of the very numerous Quinbys and Quinbys of Weare, New Hampshire.
