Biography

When Sarah Elizabeth "Essie" Rainford was born on 29 January 1873 in Wilmington, Illinois, USA, her father, Robert Rainford, was 23, and her mother, [Franklin-1970|Betsey Ann Franklin]], was 18. She grew up in Will County, although they moved to Indiana for a few years when she was 7. [1]

She was just 16 when her mother died in 1889 and maybe she had to take responsibility for her younger sister Cora and running the household. Her brother Willis was working as a laborer with her father. For whatever reason, she hedged her birthdate in records.

She married Charles E. G. Kearns on 24 August 1899 in Will, Illinois, USA and her father signed for her as a minor. In 1900 census she is 17 years and Charles is 20. He is a painter, which was her brother's occupation so perhaps that's how they met but it wasn't a good fit.

On 3 Nov 1904 she then married Joseph Jeremiah Carroll in Chicago. She claims 20 years old and Joseph is 22 ; the licence is to Miss Elizabeth Rainford. [2] They had a son together and in 1910 they're in Chicago Ward 6 on 4431 Evans Avenue, Joseph is a steamfitter, John (Jack) is 3 years old.[3]

In 1920 their son is 13; living with them are Joseph's widowed mother, his two brothers and a nephew. [4]

She died on 5 October 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, and was buried in Mount Olivet in Chicago. She was at Vincennes Sanitorium and died of paralysis of the intestines, according to the death certificate. [5]

Joseph became chief of the highway patrol and had a rewarding career; he remarried late in life. His obituary said that he was survived by one son.
