Biography

When Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Rainford was born in London, England on 23 June 1840, her father, George, was 30, and her mother, Harriet Strickland, was 24. Shortly after they emigrated to the US, her mother died and she helped with the youngest children, aged 2, 4, and 6. Then she married the widower Jason Franklin and raised his four children, plus five children together. When Jason died suddenly in 1874, she then married John F Cowan and they had two children together. She died on 30 December 1921 in Symerton, Illinois, USA, at the age of 81, and was buried in Wilmington, Illinois, USA.
