the Youngstown Vindicator (Youngstown, OH) on 7 Jul 1965: Jack H. Ralston Sr. Dies; Veteran Printer, Athlete Jack H. Ralston Sr., 58, of 331 Matthews Road, outstanding amateur baseball player, avid sports enthusiast and Vindicator makeup man for 44 years, died of a sudden heart attack at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital. Mr. Ralston had entered the hospital two weeks ago today and had a hip operation. He had had difficulty walking due to severe arthritis. He appeared to be recovering when he suffered the attack. Mr. Ralston, a skilled makeup man, was responsible for assembling stories and pictures into news pages of The Vindicator, working in close liaison with the editorial department. Mr. Ralston was born Jan. 21, 1907 in Youngstown, a son of Fred and Katherine Cramer Ralston, and had lived here all his life. He was an outstanding amateur baseball player for more than 30 years. He played outfield for the St. Stanislaus team which won the National Amateur Baseball Federation title in Pittsburgh in 1933. This was the first NABF title ever won by a Youngstown team and was instrumental in bringing NABF tournaments to the city. Mr. Ralston played outfield many years for the old Realty Trust team, which won many Class A city championships. He was a manager and player for the Youngstown Steel Door team in Class AA competition. Managed Team Also an outstanding basketball player, he was noted for his shooting ability. He played many years in various church leagues at Central YMCA. He was a bowler, participating in The Vindicator league, and also was a golfer. He remained all his life an enthusiastic sports fan and was greatly interested in all sports events. He was a member of the Youngstown Baseball Town U.S.A. Old-Timers Association. Rites Friday He joined the Vindicator 44 years ago and was a member of Youngstown Typographical Local 200. Besides his wife, the former Gertrude Woltz (sic), he leaves two sons, Jack H. Jr. of Youngstown, and Harry J. with the U.S. Navy; three daughters, Mrs. Mae Katschke of Youngstown, Mrs. Donna Arthur of Lowellville, and Miss Dorothy of Poughkeespie (sic), N. Y.; a sister, Mrs. John M. Burns of Youngstown and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
