William Havelock Chaplin Ramsden was born on 3 October 1888. He was the son of Henry Plumptre Ramsden and Ethel Frances Alice Havelock. He and Christine Adelaide Baldwin were divorced. He married Christine Adelaide Baldwin, daughter of James Yescombe Baldwin, on 22 January 1918. He was educated Bath College. He was Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918. He was Major-General Hampshire Regt, WW I, NWFP , Palestine 1939 (despatches) and WW II (despatches three times), General Officer Commanding Sudan and Eritrea 1944–45 in 1935.1 He was Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1939.
