When Sarah Randall was born on 13 April 1799, in Aylesford, Kings, Nova Scotia, Canada, her father, Nathan Randall, was 34 and her mother, Susanna Gates, was 21. She was the second of ten children born to Nathan and Susanna (Gates) Randall. Her paternal grandfather David Randall was from Connecticut. He and his family came to Kings County in 1766, part of a wave of settlers to Nova Scotia known as the New England Planters.
She married Reverand Henry Saunders on 13 November 1817, in Aylesford, Kings, Nova Scotia, Canada. Henry was an early Baptist minister in western Nova Scotia. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 6 daughters. They had the following children, all born in Aylesford: Susanah (born 1818), Nathan Randall (b. 1820), Elizabeth (b. 1821), Joseph Henry (b. 1823), Sarah Jane (b. 1825), Thomas Handley (b. 1827), Margaret (b. 1829) and Charles (b. 1831). The 1871 Census also lists Caroline Saunders, born about 1852 (aged 19) as a dependent; she was evidently adopted. [1]
William Bernard Banks (Banks-1679) was the son of Sarah Jane Saunders. She is the only known biological parent. Shortly after she gave birth, she died. Her first cousin, Abraham Banks, and his wife, Sarah Ann Rice, brought William Bernard home and kept him for a time. William Bernard, according to his daughter Ruby, was not properly nourished. His Grandma Saunders visited the Banks family, and observing the child's condition, took him home with her and he stayed and was raised further by her. She treated his severe case of rickets by covering him with sand at the seashore.
It is unclear when Sarah and Henry moved to Bear River, as census data from 1851, 1861 and 1871 all indicate Aylesford as their place of residence. They may have moved because their eldest child, Susanah, lived nearby in Morganville, Digby Co.
Sarah Saunders died on 20 August 1880, in her hometown, at the age of 81, and was buried in Bear River (Part) 6, Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her husband Henry predeceased her only 5 days earlier.
