Biography

April 4[1] or 16[2], 1663 -- Benjamin Fitz Randolph was born Barnstable, Plymouth Colony (now Barnstable County, Massachusetts).[3][4][2][5][6][7][8][9]

Alternatively

1665 -- Benjamin FitzRandolph [10] was born at Barnstable, Plymouth Colony (now Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA). [2]

Benjamin Fitz Randolph was the youngest son of Edward Fitz Randolph (1607-ca. 1684-5) and Elizabeth Blossom (1620-1713).[11][12][13]

Circa 1665 - 1668 -- Benjamin's father, Edward, moved his family, including his unmarried sons, from Barnstable, Plymouth Colony (now Barnstable county, Massachusetts) to Piscataway Township, Middlesex county, Province of East Jersey (now New Jersey).[13]

1669 -- Benjamin Fitz Randolph lived at Piscataway, Middlesex County, Province of East Jersey (now New Jersey),[15] and was patented 72 acres of land at ??[16]

1684 -- Benjamin FitzRandolph (1663-1746) lived at Piscataway, Middlesex County, Province of East Jersey.[17]

June 26, 1685 -- Benjamin's mother, Elizabeth Blossom Fitz Randolph, transferred 112 acres of land to Benjamin, at the same time as she transferred land to her other sons in New Jersey (probably because of her upcoming marriage to John Pike).[18]

Alternatively

July 16, 1689 -- Benjamin Fitz Randolph and Sarah Dennis married at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey.[21]

1690 -- In a list of those whose land had been surveyed up to 1690 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, Province of East Jersey (now New Jersey), Benjamin had 130 acres.[22]

Wife and Children

1691 -1708 -- Benjamin Fitz Randolph and Sarah Dennis had 9 children: eight daughters (Sarah, Grace, Ruth, Hope, Grace, Elizabeth, Mary, and Margaret) and three sons (Benjamin, Isaac, and Nathaniel). Children all named with Fitz Randolph surname.[23]

  1. Sara, born on April 14, 1691 at Piscataway, New Jersey. Died 1691, two weeks old;
  2. Grace, born on June 25, 1692/1693 (1693) at Piscataway, New Jersey. Died 1705 & buried at Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey;

  7. Nathaniel, born on November 11, 1703 at Stoney Brook, New Jersey. Married Rebekah Mershon in 1729;
  8. Grace, born on October 5, 1706 at Stoney Brook, New Jersey. Married on June 26, 1728 at Princeton, New Jersey Stephen Johnes (born on July 31, 1700 & died on June 18, 1785). Eight children. Died on February 26, 1786 at Princeton, New Jersey;
  9. Elizabeth, born on December 31, 1708 at Stoney Brook, New Jersey. Married Ephraim Manning on March 11, 1730/1731 at Princeton, New Jersey. Three children. Died on October 4, 1785 at Princeton, New Jersey;[3]

1696 - 1699 -- Benjamin FitzRandolph (1663-1746) and family moved to what is now Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey with a group of the Society of Friends (Quakers) whom William Penn induced to settle on a fertile plantation watered by Stony Brook, a tributary of the Millstone River.[24]

November 22, 1732 -- Sarah Dennis Fitz Randolph died at Stoney Brook, Province of New Jersey.

March 14, 1733 -- widower Benjamin Fitz Randolph and Margaret Robinson married at Province of New Jersey.[3]

Alternatively

May 14, 1753 -- widower Benjamin Fitz Randolph and Margaret Robertson married at Province of New Jersey.[25]

Benjamin Fitz Randolph and Margaret Robinson/Robertson had two daughters:[26]

  1. Mary, born on April 4, 1734 at Stoney Brook, NJ; no further record
  2. Margaret, born on November 7, 1736 at Stoney Brook, New Jersey. no further record. [3]

Children all named with Fitz Randolph surname.

Death

October 5[2] or 25, 1746 -- Benjamin died, age 83 years and 6 months old, at Princeton, Middlesex County, New Jersey.[13][6][27][28][29]

October 5, 1746 -- Benjamin Fitz Randolph died at Princeton, then was buried at the Stony Brook Quaker Meeting House Burial Ground, Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey[30][31][10]

November 27, 1746 -- date Benjamin Fitz Randolph's will was probated at Province of New Jersey.

Because Sarah's and Benjamin's deaths are recorded in the Stony Brook Quaker Meeting, and another FitzRandolph genealogy states that they were buried at Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey, they are believed to be buried in the Stony Brook Quaker Meeting House Burial Ground in Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey.[32] [33]

Family/Surname note

This surname had many different spellings, including Fitzrandle, Fittsrendolfe, or Fittsrandolfe[34], with FitzRandolph or Fitz Randolph emerging as the most common. Fitz Randolph is being recommended as the standard, recognizing though that in later years, Fitz sometimes became used as a middle name for sons and optional for daughters. In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy[3] assumes this to be the case when listing the children in both the family in which Benjamin is a child and the one in which he is the father. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph.

However, how Fitz Randolph was used in legal documents and when births were recorded documents needs to be confirmed. Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!

But also see: This family is descended from the European Aristocrat family of: Fitz Randolph, the format of the family name has changed over the coarse of time especially leading up to the Revolutionary War. From this family to present time it is suggested to standardize to the Format used by "Princeton University" of FitzRandolph. http://www.princeton.edu/mudd/news/faq/topics/fitz_randolph.shtml

Therefore, we have two different formats which are both being espoused as the standard we should use for the surname of this family. The argument for using FitzRandolph is that this is the format Nathaniel FitzRandolph used in his book regarding his family which is located in the Princeton Library.

Debi, Fitz Randolph is frequently spelled a variety of ways; this is a case where we are protecting the LNAB when the likelihood of dupes with various spellings could get created. I've raised this issue on the Leader and Arborist groups.

I agree. I had asked Sue Howard what sources she used in making this change. She responded that she was trying to work through the new 'error' program and it said Margaret was listed as both mother and wife of Benjamin Fitz Randolph-95. She decided to make Margaret the wife of Benjamin Jr, since she was younger than him.

I told her that I recognize there is a huge age difference between Benjamin Sr and Margaret Robinson, who is younger than many of his kids from his 1st marriage. However, I pointed out that multiple books show Margaret Robinson as Benjamin's 2nd wife (as indicated in his biography). For that reason, I believe Margaret Robinson should remain in Benjamin Sr's profile as his wife, unless there is actual evidence he was not married to her.

She agreed so I will fix.

Susan- I suggest you remove Margaret from Benjamin-95 and re-attach back here to Benjamin-41, which is supported by the Fitz Randolph genealogies. I think Sue's action was just an attempt to correct a duplication and was not based on evidence as such, That should put everything back in order.

Thomas - Good catch!

I show that Benjamin Jr (Benjamin Fitz Randolph-95) married Elizabeth Pridemore in Mar 1727, which is supported by the Findagrave for her, which says:

"The following information was copied at Princeton University library (Firestone) that houses the Fitz-Randolph papers. The University prohibits the posting of the actual records. Words in [ ] were added for easier understanding.

Benjamin Fitz Randolph ,Jr. born at PrinceTown [NJ] April 24th 1699 was maryed [married] to Elisabeth Pridmore March 13:1727/8."

I plan to look into this a little more.

Thanks again, Thomas!

Susan -- I see that Margaret Robinson-2857 is currently linked as the wife of Benjamin's son, also named Benjamin Fitz Randolph-95, so let's doublecheck the sources for both father and son to straighten it out: will the real husband of Margaret please stand up! The Fitz Randolph genealogies certainly suggest it is Benjamin-41.

Findagrave shows Margaret Robinson as Benjamin's 2nd wife. I realize that FAG doesn't always show sources for its information, but wanted to pass this along for consideration.

Sue Howard - Hi,

I realize you may have had good documentation for removing Margaret Robinson as Benjamin's spouse. I was just wondering what it is?

Most books about the Fitz Randolphs that I have seen show Margaret Robinson as Benjamin's 2nd wife, e.g., p 8 of "The descendants of Edward Fitz Randolph and Elizabeth Blossom 1630-1950" by Louise Aymar Christian and Howard Stelle Fitz Randolph. Link: http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=11497

If you could let me know, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
