Biography

Nancy (Fitz Randolph) Davis was born in 1781 in Piscataway, NJ to Samuel Fitz Randolph and Margaret Fitz Randolph, first cousins who were part of a close-knit Seventh Day Baptist Church community there. In the late 1780's, Nancy moved with her family first to Fayette County in southwestern Pennsylvania, and then in 1792 on to western Virginia (now West Virginia), where they settled a tract of frontier land purchased by her father, and there established the town of New Salem (today Salem, WV) with a number of other SDB families from Shrewsbury, NJ and elsewhere (see her father's biography for more details).[1] One of the original deed owners in New Salem was the Nathan Davis family from Shrewsbury.[2] Nancy married Nathan's son, Stephen Crandal Davis in 1802. The couple settled to farm near Salem in Cherry Camp Run and raised a family of thirteen children, three of whom died young. They also had at least one girl indentured to them: Hannah Tharp, in 1800 after the death of her mother.[3] Her husband Stephen died in 1869 and Nancy passed away in 1871 in Salem at 90 years old. They are both buried in the SDB Church graveyard in Salem. Her gravestone[4] reads:

Nancy, wife of Stephen C. Davis, born Feb. 19, 1781; died June 18, 1871, aged 90 ys., 3 mos., 29 ds.

Children:

  1. David D., 1803-1885; m. Anna Davis, 1826
  2. Mary, 1805-1857; m. John Skinner, 1823
  3. Nancy, 1807-aft. 1860
  4. Stephen, 1809-1811
  5. Elizabeth, 1812-1885; m. Augustus J. Martin, 1829
  6. Nathan Gifford, 1814-1863; m. Maryan M Davis, 1838
  7. Sarah, 1814-1865; m. Winter Smith Hutson, 1834
  8. Margaret, 1817-1895; m. Lodowick Hughes Davis, 1835
  9. Rulana, 1819-1867; m. Albert Ford
  10. Louisa, 1821-1826
  11. Tabitha, 1823-1823
  12. Randolph Charles, 1826-1896; m1. Elizabeth Jane Meek, 1851; m2. Nancy Fitz Randolph, 1867

Surname Note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy[5] assumes this to be the case when listing the children in the family in which Nancy is a child. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in legal documents and when births were recorded documents.) Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!

Geography Note

Nancy settled in Harrison County which at the time was part of the State of Virginia. The county was in the part of Virginia that in 1863 became the State of West Virginia. So Nancy stayed in the same place as an adult, although it changed names.
