Biography

Katheryn was born in 1899. She is the daughter of Joe Rankin and Emma Lewellyn. ^[1]

Katheryn Loretta “Etta” Rankin was born on 13 April 1899 in Water Valley, Yalobusha, Mississippi, the daughter of Joe Marcellus Rankin and Emma M. Llewellyn, the sixth of their twelve children. Loretta married Arthur Lee Gates, 1897-1975. They had two children, Mary Katheryn Gates, 1923; and Kenneth Rankin Gates, 1928. She died in Texas in 1988. ^[2]

In 1900, the Rankin family lived on their rented farm in Sarepta, Calhoun County, Mississippi. The family included Joe M. Rankin, 36, a farmer; his wife of nine years, Emma M., 28, who had had six children, five of whom were living; and their children, Josie A., 7; Odie M., 6; Amie M., 5; Alvie A., 3; and Loretta, 1. All members of the family were born in Mississippi. ^[3]

In 1910, the Rankin family lived on a rented farm in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The household included Joe M. Rankin, 45, a farmer; his wife of 20 years, Emma, 27, who had had eleven children, eight of whom were living; their children, Odie, 16; Alvie, 13; Etta, 11; Marvin, 9; Moxie (John, Jr.), 6; Lillian, 4; Melvin, 2; and Harvey, 3 months of age. All members of the family were born in Mississippi. ^[4]

In 1920, the Rankin family lived on their farm in Van Zandt, Mississippi. The family included Joe M. Rankin, 55, a farmer; his wife, Emma M., 47; their children, Etta C., 19, a farm laborer; Marvin, 18; Joe M., 15; Lillian M., 14; George M., 12; Harvey, 9; and Charley E., 7. Living nearby was Alvie A. Rankin, 22, and his wife, Lydia, 20. ^[5]

Katheryn Etta Rankin and her husband Arthur Lee Gates are mentioned in the birth record of their son, Kenneth Rankin Gates, born 20 April 1928 in Van Zandt County, Texas. ^[6]

In 1940, the Gates family lived on N. Austin Street in Edgewood, Van Zandt, Texas. They had lived in Edgewood for at least five years. The household included Arthur L. Gates, 42, born in Louisiana, the proprietor of a cafe, who had completed three years of high school; his wife, Etta, 40, b. Mississippi, a cafe waitress, who had completed four years of high school; and their children, both b. Texas, Mary K., 16; and Kenneth R., 9. ^[7]

Katheryn Loretta Gates was born 13 April 1899. She died, aged 89, on 3 July 1888 in Smith County, Texas. Her last residence was in Edgewood, Van Zandt, Texas. ^{[8] [9]}

Katheryn Loretta (Rankin) Gates is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Edgewood, Texas, with her husband; their daughter; two siblings, Alvie A. and Ona V.; and other family. ^[10]
