Biography

Margaret Alice “Maggie” Rankin was born in Jasper, Missouri on 12 April 1884, the daughter of Joseph Martin Rankin and America Sevier. Maggie married Jonathan “Dick” Rawley in 1909 in Owen, Indiana. They had ten children, born between 1910 and 1925. Maggie died on 10 October 1960 in Worthington, Greene, Indiana.[1]

In 1900, the Rankin family lived in Vineyard Township, Stotts city, Lawrence, Missouri. The household included Joseph M. Rankin, 40, born in Indiana in Dec. 1860 (father b. VA; mother b. TN), a farmer; his wife, America, 39, born in Kentucky, June 1861 (parents b. KY); their children, all born in Missouri, except as noted: John, 19, b. Indiana, July 1881, farm laborer; Maggie A., 16, b. Aug. 1884; Lizzie, 12, b. June 1888, in school; Minnie M., 9, b. June 1891, in school; Lily M., 7, b. Oct. 1893; and Ada, 5, b. Sept. 1895.[2]

Jonathan Rawley, 25, and Maggie M. Rankin, 25, were married on 10 April 1909 in Owen, Indiana. James McClure officiated. Maggie was born 12 August 1884 in Indiana (error), the daughter of Joseph Rankin and Americus Sevier. Jonathan was born 29 July 1884 in Indiana, the son of Henry Rawley and Lizzie Huller.[3]

In 1920, the Rawley family lived on their farm in Lafayette, Owen, Indiana. The family included Jonathan Rawley, 35, born in Indiana, a farmer; his wife, Maggie A., 35, born in Missouri; their children, all born in Indiana, Henry J., 9, in school; Jessie A., 8; Lena R., 5; Zira D., 3; and Lizzie C., 1. Living nearby were two other Rawley households: Perry Rawley and his family; and Sarah C. Rawley, a widow, and her family.[4]

In 1930, the Rawley family lived in Lafayette Township, Owen, Indiana. The household included Maggie Rawley, 45, a widow, born in Missouri, a farmer; her children, all born in Indiana, Henry J., 20, who did odd jobs; Nina R., 15; Zira D., 14; Lizzie C., 12; Dorothy M., 10; Alice A., 8; and Ross R., 4.[5]

Margaret Alice (Rankin) Rawley is buried with her parents; her husband; and a sister, Ella, at Dutch Bethel Cemetery, Freedom, Indiana.[6]
