Harold Raper was born in Holme on Spalding Moor, his father's home village, on the edge of the plain which sweeps from the Yorkshire Wolds twenty miles west and south to the Humber and the Derwent. The village is dominated by the Holme, a steep hill rising above the damp plain.
Isaac Raper seems to have six children mainly on marshy farms forty miles around Howden, two in Lincolnshire, and the last, Harold, back in his own home village, Holme on Spalding Moor [1]
