August Rauth, Jr., a resident of Massapequa for the past seven years, died at Brunswick Hospital, Amityville on August 22, 2000. He was 99 years of age. Prior to moving to Massapequa, he had been a resident of Amityville 23 years. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 25, 1901, Mr. Rauth had formerly been a 50 year employee with Belmont Race Track in Elmont, first as a mechanic and later as a foreman. Heretired in 1967. He was also a member of the International Machinists Association. Mr. Rauths wife, Mamie, predeceased him in January of 1988. Two daughters, Elaine Hawthorne and Ruth Conklin, also predeceased him, Elaine in October of 1993 and Ruth in June of 1981. Survivors include grandsons, James E. Hawthorne of Massapequa, with whom he made his home and David Hawthorne of Encino, Calif., a great granddaughter, Yvette Reid Carmen of Amityville and a great grandson, Guy Reid of Port Jefferson. A granddaughter, Donna Reid predeceased him in November 1990 and a grandson, Richard J. Reid, Jr., also predeceased him in September of 1985. The Reverend George Matzat conducted the funeral service in the funeral home on Thursday morning, August 24. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery,Brooklyn, New York. Arrangements were under the direction of the Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville.
