Biography

Too Many Graces

  • Grace Makin: d/o Tobias; died after 1643; m. Edmund Sherman
  • Grace Ravens: d. 1662; m. John Sherman, Thomas Rogers (d. 1638) and Roger Porter
  • Torrey's New England Marriages confused them assigning Makin to John Sherman and Thomas Rogers.[1] The Sherman Genealogy confused them naming Makin as John's wife.[2]

Name

Name: Grace Ravens (last name at birth)
Name: Grace Sherman (first marriage)
Name: Grace Rogers (second marriage)
Name: Grace Porter (third and final marriage)

Origin

According to Michael J. Wood, Grace was probably born about 1591 in East Bergholt, county of Suffolk, England, the daughter of Rev. Richard Ravens and the granddaughter of William Ravens.[3]

Grace (Ravens) was a sister of Mary (Ravens) Coolidge.[4] [5]

Immigration

According to Thomas Townsend Sherman, Grace, her husband, Thomas Rogers, and her son, John Sherman, immigrated about 1636 aboard an unknown ship.[2]

Marriages

Grace married three times.[6]

  • She married 2nd, by 1617, to Thomas Rogers.[TAG 62:76] He was buried at Watertown on 12 November 1638.[4]
  • She married 3rd, after 1638, to Roger Porter.[TAG 62:76-77]

Children

Children of Grace and John Sherman:[3]

  1. John Sherman, bpt 3 Sept 1612, d 25 Jan 1691; m Martha Palmer, d/o William Palmer
  2. Richard Sherman, bpt 7 Aug 1614, may have remained in or returned to England

Child of Grace and Thomas Rogers:[4]

  1. Elizabeth Rogers bpt 16 Nov 1617; mar Daniel Smith

Grace and Roger Porter had no children (by this marriage, Grace was at least 47 years old)

Death and Legacy

Grace's will was undated, but it was proved on 17 June 1662, Grace Porter left land to John Sherman and to 'my daughter Elisabeth Smith.' She also left to Elisabeth wearing clothes, linen and a kettle. Items were left to the children of Elisabeth. The inventory included the statement that "in case their brother in England shall legally obtain against the estate that they jointly and equally do tender estate for satisfying the same."[5]

For an abstract of Grace's will see NEHGR 51:311.[7]

Research Notes

Note by Gilly Wood: Grace married first John Sherman, second Thomas Rogers, third Roger Porter.[8]

Grace (Ravens) (Sherman) (Rogers) Porter was sister of Mary (Ravens) Coolidge, wife of John Coolidge {1635, Watertown}. Grace 1st married John Sherman, who died in England before 1617. Their son, John Sherman, also came to Watertown in 1634. Another son, Richard Sherman, may also have come to New England, and may have been living in England in 1662. By 1617 Grace (Ravens) Sherman, remarried to Thomas Rogers. They came from Dedham, Essex to Watertown MA in 1634. They had one only recorded child: Elizabeth (Rogers) Smith. Grace (Ravens) (Sherman) (Rogers) married (3) after 1638, Roger Porter {1638, Watertown}. In 1987 Michael J. Wood published a study of the Ravens family of Dedham, Essex. She died June 3,1662 at Watertown,MA. (Her will, proved Jun 17,1662, is in NEHGR Vol 51.)

Caution: incorrect information:

  • Captain John Sherman, baptized at Great Horkesley, Essex, England 3 Sep 1612 went with his mother, Grace Makin, (Caution: source may repeat earlier errors ie. Grace's maiden name was not Makin) step-father Thomas Rogers, and half-sister Elizabeth Rogers to Watertown, Massachusetts in 1634. Grace's third husband was named Porter and her will was proved 17 Jun 1662 under the name Grace Porter.[9]
  • Grace Porter (his wife remarried) died in Watertown, leaving a will proved 17 June 1662. She was the mother-in-law of Captain John Sherman, who was married to one of the two children of Thomas Rogers. Grace gave nothing to the children of William Palmer or Roger Porter (her other spouses); but only gave to the children 'of her blood.' Grace left legacies to 'son John Sherman and to her daughter Elizabeth Smith' and Elizabeth's children. On the inventory of Grace's estate was mentioned a brother in England, in case he should 'legally obtain against the estate,' which was said to be the Richard Sherman described in Anne Anger's will, as one of the two children of the wife of Thomas Rogers.[10]

There was no marriage to William Palmer.[11] Grace's son, John Sherman, married Martha Palmer, the daughter of William Palmer. This was the reason that in William Palmer's release of land, John Sherman was called his son-in-law.[12] On 23 May 1655 Grace Porter, of Watertowne, 'proferring a petition for power to make sale of a certain house and land left by her deceased husband, hath her petition granted, unless Daniel Smyth, of Watertowne, husband of the daughter of Thomas Rogers, mentioned in the petition, shall... show cause to the contrary... [4]

Bond made an error when he interpreted the term, "son-in-law," as step-son. This is understandable, as the term held both meanings at that time.[13][14] Grace was the mother of Elizabeth (Rogers) Smith[15]

  • Grace, widow of Thomas Rogers, who died in Watertown 12 Nov 1638, married William Palmer. Grace and Martha (wife of Captain John Sherman) were mentioned in William's will. After he died Grace returned to Watertown and married thirdly Roger Porter. Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Smith, was a daughter by Grace's first husband, Thomas Rogers (Colonial Records, col iv, p 232). [16]
  • Son by John Sherman: John Sherman bpt Great Horkesley, Essex 3 Sep 1612 (d. 1691/2) [TAG 62:76-77][17]

Makin-162 and Ravens-1 appear to represent the same person because: The surname Makin is wrong. Grace Ravens and Grace Main have been confused. The mother of Elizabeth Rogers Smith was Grace Ravens (wife of Thomas Rogers) Grace Ravens d. 1662.
