LETTER IN SUPPORT OF PENSION APPLICATION FOR ADAM RAY
Louisiana State Archives
Sycamore, LA June 2d 1903
Secretary of Board Pension Commissioners, Baton Rouge, La
Dear Sir= I am requested by Mr. Adam Ray, formerly of Company F. 2d La, Bat. Heavy Artillery , to make a little statement to you, and ask for some information in regard to him drawin g a pension, he has made one application and failed, from only one cause, which is that he ta ken the oath of allegiance to the U.S. government during the war, which was done under very p eculiar circumstances, he was detailed hauling for the Confederacy, hauling cotton and othe r government property from Alexandria to Niblets Bluff on Sabine river, at the time when Gene ral Banks invaded this state, and had just got out of Alexandria a short distance in the wood s with a load of confederate cotton on his wagon, and he was uneasy of being captured by fede rals and still worse, the country was then flooded with "bushwhackers, or Jay hawkers" and h e was more afraid of them than he was of the Yanks, so he slipped into Alexandria and taken t he oath, and remained quiet until the country was rided of the Yankees and Jay hawkers, afte r which he gathered up his team, and wagon load of cotton and carried it on to Niblets Bluff , and delivered it up, and then came back to Alexandria, and attached himself to Capt Canns , co. F 2d La, Bat, Heavy artillery and served faithfully until close of the war, Would ther e be any chance for him under these circumstances, or would it be of any use for him to emplo y an attorney to look after his claim,
Hoping you will be kind enough to make reply to this, I am Respectfully yours,
L. C. Bass
