Biography

John was the only son of Henry Rayburn and "Miss Ross". He married "Jean McClarin, a Scotch lady."[1]

"John Rayburn (son of Henry) was born about 1750 in Montgomery County, Virginia, where he died February 17, 1808. He lived at the forks of the Roanoke and in the course of his life acquired 747 acres of land, most of it located on Bradshaw Creek to the northwest. In the French and Indian war he served in Capt. Hog's Company of Rangers. In 1776 he was the road overseer, was constable in 1778, and in 1781 was given a commission as Lt. in the Militia. He married Jean McLaren, [McClaren] and they had seven children, all born in Montgomery County area."[2]

Land Records

"John Reaburn lived at the Forks of Roanoke. He had land in 1770, 53 acres on the south side of North Fork; in 1782, 544 acres adjoining Isaac Taylor on North Fork and 85 acres adjoining John Yoakum of the south side of the river; 1789, 15 acres adjoining Isaac Taylor; 1790, with Andrew Miller, 70 and 90 acres on North Fork; 1794, 55 acres above Isaac Taylor’s. John Reaburn was commissioned Lieutenant 1781. He had been road overseer in place of Hugh Crockett in 1776, and constable in place of Wm. Neely and Moses Dunlap in 1778. In the French and Indian War he served in Capt. Hog’s Company of Rangers.” The John Rayburn land was at the junction of the North Fork and South Fork of Roanoke at the present village of Lafayette. The house stood by the road up North Fork about a quarter of mile from the Forks."[3]

He married on 16 Feb 1762 in Botetourt Co., Virginia to Jane “Jenny” McClaren.[4]

She was born 30 NOV 1777 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died 19 FEB 1848 in Wayne Co., Tennessee.
  2. Margaret Rayburn was born ABT 1769 in Augusta Co., Virginia, and died AFT 14 JUL 1814. She married Hugh Casslin Sr. Donaghe. He was born ABT 1760. She married James Donaghe 8 FEB 1785 in Botetourt Co., Virginia. He was born ABT 1760 in Botetourt Co., Virginia, and died ABT 1801.
  3. Mary Polly Rayburn was born ABT 1771 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died ABT 1806 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. She married Samuel CAPTAIN Shanklin 14 JUL 1789 in Botetourt Co., Virginia, son of Robert CAPTAIN Shanklin and Rebekah (Gordon). He was born ABT 1769 in Botetourt Co., Virginia, and died SEP 1850 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. [5]
  4. Jane Rayburn was born ABT 1773 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. She married William Pepper 10 OCT 1791 in Botetourt Co., Virginia. He was born 14 SEP 1776 in Montgomery Court, Virginia.
  5. John Rayburn was born 7 MAY 1775 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died BET 1841 AND 1850 in Yalobusha Co., Mississippi. He married Elizabeth Sinclair Shanklin JUN 1798 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, daughter of Robert CAPTAIN Shanklin and Rebekah (Gordon). She was born 30 OCT 1780 in probably Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died ABT 1853 in Yalobusha Co., Mississippi.
  6. Rachel Rayburn was born ABT 1780 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died BET 1851 AND 1860 in White Co., Tennessee. She married James Taylor 5 AUG 1800 in Botetourt Co., Virginia. He was born ABT 1775 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died AFT 1861 in White Co., Tennessee.
  7. Rebecca Rayburn was born 19 MAR 1783 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died 21 DEC 1824 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. She married William Wallace Reyburn 25 NOV 1804 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, son of James JUDGE Reyburn and Margaret Wallace. He was born 16 FEB 1779 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died 22 JAN 1835 in probably Montgomery Co., Virginia.[6]

“John Rayburn - his Will

In the name of God, Amaen. I John Rayburn of the parish of Ronoke and County of Montgomery, being of present mind and of a sound memory and calling to mind the unsartenity of human life do make this my last will and Testament

first comit my soul unto the hands of the Almighty God trusting in mercies and merits of my Redeemer for the remishon of all my sines; my body I comit to Earth to be buried at the discreshon of my Executors hereafter named, and as to my temprol Estate I dispose of it in the fowling maner

first I bequeth to my beloved wife Jenney Rayburn her bed and furetue [furniture] with a horse or mair and sadle and hir living of the Estate during her widowhood

nixt I bequith to my Daughter Pegy Donaghe fifty pounds or a equal part with sisters to hir and the hairs of hir body forever

nixt I bequeth to my sun Henry ten dollars to him and his hairs forever

nixt I bequith to Hiram Rayburn Henry's sun Sixty Dolars in a horse and Sadle and his close to ware forever

and apoint Samuel Shanklin, William Peper and William W. Rayburn my lawful Exectors, and all my land and property to be sould and equaly divided amonge these hereafter named Mary Shanklin and the Hairs of hir body forever Jenny Pepper and the Hairs of her body forever John Rayburn my son and his hires forever Rachell Taylor and the hairs of hir body forever Rebecka Rayburn Williams wife to hir and the hairs of hir body forever

and I bequith that all the Lands my sun John Rayburn sold in Kentuckey in my name and made tittles for shall stand good as if I had made them myself

when this place is sold I live on, I bequith to the Grave yard be excepted and the spot where the meeting house stands that it be not sold while that house is there but may be sold afterwards but no grave yard but one on the place

disannulling all other wills by me made but this alone being my last will and Testament

In witness hereof I have sett my hand and seil the 18 of January 1807. NB I bequith that my Excetors have 6 years to sell and colect the debts befour called on by the Legettees for setlement

At Montgomery March Court 1808

This last will and Testament of John Rayburn deceased with the two several codicils thereto annexed was presented in Court and proven the said Will and first Codicil by the Oath of Alexander H. Robertson and Roswell Johnson. The second Codicil by the Oath of James Barnett Jun’r and Roswell Johnson witnesses thereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded and on motion of Samuel Shanklin, William Pepper and William Rayburn the Executors therein named who made oath and entered into Bond with security according to Law Certificates granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
