Biography

Bethia Rea/Ray

Origin

Bethia was born "say 1630" according to Anderson, possibly at Salem, Massachusetts.[1] She was a daughter of Daniel Rea and her father immigrated from England to Plymouth c. 1630 and removed by 1631 to Salem Massachusetts. We do not have record of her birth, and since she was born around that time, she could have been born in any of those three places.

Family

Bethia married three times.[1]

  • She married after 1637 and before 1652 in Salem, Massachusetts, as her 1st, to Captain Thomas Lathrop/Lothrop. He died in 1675.
  • She married by June 1676, as her 2nd, to Joseph Grafton [EQC 48:132] .
  • She married in 1683 at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts to William Goodhue.

In 1652, Captain Thomas Lothrop returned to England and told his mother that he had no children and probably never would.[1] Thomas Lothrop was slain in 1675 during King Philip's War.[2] At the December Term 1675, Bethia was chosen by the Court to be executrix for his estate.[2] Bethia never had children.

Death and Legacy

She appears to have died before 7 December 1686, when her sister-in-law (Ellen/Elinore (Lathrop) Cheever) and children ratified the sale of land in which Bethia had a life estate. [ELR 7:93]

Rea-106 and Ray-1654 appear to represent the same person because: Sue, the vitals of Rea-106 don't seem right and should be closer to Ray-1654. She's documented in Great Migration Begins, profile for Thomas Lothrop (pp 1201-1206), her first husband whom she married about 1637; after his 1675 death, she m2. (by 1680) Joseph Grafton; she then m3 about 1684 William Goodhue. She died before 1686. (See details on Ray-1654.) What do you think?
