Charles Reay is Engine man, though it s not clear whether this is railway or traction engine or even beam engine. The 1871 census says he is Engine driver in a coal mine and born Ireland. Son john has the word Rail added to his description of stoker. The Cock(er) is of course the river which joins the Derwent in Cockermouth and flows to the sea in Workington. [1]
