Biography

Summary

Ann was born 1628 in Tandgree, Kilmore, Ireland. Ann was the daughter of Nicholas Ree and Ann Ree. Ann married Valentine Hollingsworth, son of Henry Hollingsworth of Bellenickcrannell [Ballyvickcrannell], in 1655. Valentine and Ann were Friends (Quakers). They had four children. Ann died in 1671 at 42 years of age. She was buried in the Friends Burial Ground in Moyraverty, about 2 miles northeast of the farm at Ballyvickcrannell. Valentine subsequently married Ann Calvert. Valentine, his second wife Ann, and their children emigrated to America.

Name

Name: Ann /Ree/ (last name spelling from the Lurgan Quaker Meeting Records, "Ann the daughter of Nicolass Ree of Tanragee in the County of Armagh")[1]
Name: Ann /Rea/ (last name spelling from reference to marriage of "James Greer and Eleanor Rea, wit. Ann Hollingsworth & Mary Rea. Mary Rea was the sister of Valentine's first wife, Ann Rea."[1]

Birth

Date: about 1628
Place: Tanragee [now Tandragee], County Armagh, Ireland
Source: Lurgan Quaker Meeting Records (see below)[1][2][3][4]

Marriage

According to the Lurgan Quaker meeting records, Ann Ree married Valentine [Vallantine] Hollingsworth on the 7th day of the 4th month of 1655.[5] This date likely corresponds to 7 June 1655 in modern calendar,[6] as at that time Quakers counted months starting with March = 1. (Note that many sources have interpretted this date as 7 Apr 1655.[3])

They likely married in the Lurgan Meeting House, in County Armagh, as marriages were affirmed at Quaker meetings. (Some sources have suggested it took place in Down County, Parish of Shankill, Ireland.[6])

Children

Mary Hollingsworth
Henry Hollingsworth
Thomas Hollingsworth
Catherine Hollingsworth

Death

Ann died on the 1st day of the 2nd month in 1671, according to the Lurgan Quaker Meeting records.[1] Since Quakers counted March as the first month, this corresponds to 1 Apr 1671 in modern calendar (1 Feb 1671 is reported in some sources[3][6]). She is assumed to have died on the family property in Ballyvickcrannell, County Armagh, Ireland.

Burial

Place: Friends Burial Ground, Moyraverty, County Armagh, Ireland

Lurgan Quaker Meeting records

The original information on Ann Rees is largely from Lurgan Quaker Meeting records (County Armagh, Ireland), which have been transcribed and circulated through various other sources.[5] The following transcription is from The Hollingsworth Register, Vol 1, Number 1 and Vol 5, Number 1.[1][7]

"Vallantine Hollingsworth son of Henry Hollingsworth of Bellenickcrannell, in the parish of Sego and County of Ardmagh and of Katheran his wife, was borne at Bellenickcranell, aforesaid, about the sixth month in the yeare 1632, and upon the seaventh day of the fowerth month - Anno Domini, 1655, he tooke to wife Ann the daughter of Nicolass Rees of Tanragee in the County of Ardmagh aforesd. and of Ann his wife who was borne in Tanragee aforesaid about the yeare, 1628, and had by her children borne as followeth. - - - -"

"Mary Hollingsworth first daughter of Vallantine Hollingsworth and of Ann his wife was borne at Bellenickcranell in the parish of Sego and County of Ardmagh, the five and twentyeth Day of ye first month Anno Domini, 1656 - - -"

"Henry Hollingsworth first son of Vallantine Hollingsworth and of Ann his wife was born at Bellenickcranell aforesd ye seaventh day of ye 2/mth 1658 - - -"

"Thomas Hollingsworth second son of Vallantine Hollingsworth and of Ann his wife was borne at Bellenickcranell, aforesaid the beginning of the third month Anno Domini, 1661. - - - - - - - -"

"Katheran Hollingsworth second daughter of Vallantine Hollingsworth and of Ann his wife, was borne at Bellenickcranell, aforesaid, in the fifth month, Anno Domini, 1663, - - - - - (above all written in one hand.)"

"And it came to pass that on the first Day of the second month Anno Domi. 1671, the aforesaid Ann (Wife to ye said Vallantine Hollingsworth) Died, and upon the twelueth day of the fouerth month, Anno Domi. 1672, he againe tooke to Wife Ann the Daughter of Thomas Calluart of Dromgorr in the parish of Sego and County of Ardmagh aforesd. and of Jane his wife) Who was borne in Killwarling in ye County of Down, about ye ninth month Anno Domi. 1650 and had by her children borne as followeth - - - - - - -"

"Ann Hollingsworth (wife to Vollantine Hollingsworth) of Ballyvickarannell deceased the first day of the second month ANNO DOM: 1671, and was buried in ye burying place of ye people of god at Monreauerty."[7] (Note: "Monreauerty" is now called Moyraverty, about two miles northeast of the farm at Ballyvickcrannell. Most of the Friends of Seagoe Meeting were buried there.)[7]

Other Notes

Note 1: Marriage of James Greer and Eleanor Rea on 1.12.1675, was witnessed by Ann Hollingsworth & Mary Rea. Mary Rea was the sister of Valentine's first wife, Ann Rea. Ann Calvert was the 2d wife of Valentine (who did not sign). This shows a friendship between the two families.[1]

Note 2: John Hollingsworth visited the cemetery where Ann Ree was buried in 2005 and gave the following description in an email:

"The cemetery is small perhaps a 1/4 of an acre (just a guess) with a stone wall surrounding it. It is well kept and green with grass. I recall that it is located on Bluestone road and curiously there are a lot of smooth blue stones located in the little cemetery.
Only a few graves are marked....maybe half a dozen as I understand the Quakers did not believe in marking their graves. There is a large plaque on the wall that lists the date of death, Surname, First name, Relationship and Townland of those buried there:
1671/02/01 HOLLINGSWORTH ANN WIFE OF VALENTINE BALLYMACRAMELL
I believe Ann is the only Hollingsworth buried there."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

The Quaker records seem to use the spelling Ree and Rae pretty evenly. For consistency (and because this profile was created first) I have merged the other profile into this one.

The OLN listed is Rae. Is this a typo as the alternate spelling most commonly seen by me in looking at several of the transcribed (secondary) records appears to be Rea? There are a multitude of profiles for this lineage on WT that should likely be merged.

Ree-2 and Rea-580 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates and places of birth and death. Rea and Ree are alternate spellings.

The question about this profile that was sent by Lori Harlan is probably about the profile of second wife Ann (Calvert) Hollingsworth, said to have died in Delaware. I've asked Lori to start a G2G thread about it so that we can all participate.

Thanks Liz! Still a couple of loose ends though:

1) Would be good for a Quaker expert to check my interpretation of the marriage and death months. I've used "likely correct" language for now, but maybe it can be worded stronger as quite a few sources quote the "wrong" dates. 2) I've kept most of the original references, but I think they just retransmit the same source info. Maybe they can be moved to "See also" and cleanup the Source list a little. 3) Some hint that marriage was in County Down. Seems unlikely but I have not tried to follow that thread to see its basis. 4) Has son Valentine. He needs to be moved to second wife Ann. I have contacted PM.

Thanks for taking it on Paul! I think the PPP was added to preserve "Ree" spelling before the Quaker project got going.

Hi, This profile is presently an uncleaned merge of 10 profiles. So it must be of interest to a lot of people, but is not very useful as is.

I would be willing to clean up this profile, but as it is a project-protected profile I am checking first if there is a reason not to. My intent would be to keep all the sourced information, but group it together, as well as remove duplicate sources and extraneous GEDCOM text.
